Dominic Solanke

Defoe should have moved on some time ago IMO... He is obviously not in EH's plans and simply doesn't fit to our style... Looking back at the whole signing, emotionally it was great, but everything else about it was blatantly wrong.

He's taking up a lot of wages that we could easily spend on contracts for not only new young and hungry players, but also to increase our top players' earnings in attempts to keep them here (Ake, Wilson etc.)

Solanke is a pretty solid player, he has an England cap remember and done well at U-21 and below as well. He does score goals. If for example, Defoe moved on, maybe Lys gets a loan, then I could easily welcome Solanke to supplement Callum and Josh. Probably better in the air than either of those, in regards hold up play at least. Although saying that and seeing Callum's headed goal last weekend, he's not too bad either!

...not sure that Solanke will be an AFCB player in the near future...I see that we are being linked with Loftus-Cheek who would be a huge asset to us..still hope that we can pitch in for Nathaniel Clyne, who is being tracked by Fulham

Alright...Alright...we've already agreed that we sign everyone we're linked with thank you.

I think you are right re overseas based players. Often linked but rarely happens in contrast to uk based players where the links seem better informed.

Correct. I stated this on his initial signing. He was reportedly paid a 60k signing on fee and was 36 years of age and offered a 3 year contract. Pure madness! A very poor signing in my view and I have been proven right. He was a great servant to us in the past but we should not have signed him in the first place

If we are signing new players they have to be an upgrade on what we already have, and although I love Jermaine,I don't think he's up to it now,so Solanke is just the sort of young player with a point to prove we should be looking at.

Don't forget there is going to be strong interest in Wilson during the January window and we not be able to say no to an offer so we need a plan B ready to go.

Solanke has links to this area, not obvious ones but this could make sense.

Links to the area? Dom is a Basingstoke boy, went through primary school and first year or so of secondary school with my daughter, before Chelsea moved the whole family to London. My understanding is he went to Liverpool because the deal they offered was significantly better than Chelsea and had hoped for more first team football. They sort of keep in touch, in her words, "he's changed!". I'm not entirely sure he would buy into the ethos.

You know what would be great? If we called back Surridge, and sent him on loan to a Championship club for the rest of the season. If he can score at that level then we don't need to go for someone like Solanke (who personally, I don't rate at all).

No, not for me. The lad has talent but there’s a reason why Chelsea let him go without too much of a fight. No better than what we have in my opinion.
With out too much of a fight? As far as I remember he ran down his contract in search of first team football. Not a thing Chelsea could do about it. Chelsea had no choice but to let it go to a tribunal with the hope of getting the best compensation possible.

You are correct that he is a Bangingstoke boy, he has family and friends links to this area.

From what I remember being reported at the time they offered him a new contract, he wanted a huge sum (if memory serves about £50k p/w - don’t ask for a source as I don’t remember exactly, that’s just my usually unreliable memory!) and they flat out refused and stop negotiating. If they really wanted to keep him, I’d imagine they’d have flexed their financial muscle a bit more.

Edit* just did some digging and it looks like the 50k that was touted around (Telegraph and Daily M#*^) was later confirmed to be a load of rubbish.

He's dog, rather have Defoe who can still score given chances.

This is a strange (or worrying!) one.
Presumably both he and LFC would want him to go out on loan so that he plays every week, so who would he replace in our team to get regular games?
