Match Report and MOM v Sheff Utd

Just watched Goals On Sunday.....they showed their goal...both Rico and Callum were pointing at their overlapping player before the kick was taken.... So who was to blame? The players for not reacting and re-organising themselves? Or management for not allowing them to react?

Modern day football seems to be very apologetic for the players. Point blame at the manager for every scenario rather than players taking responsibility.

Personally Howe didn’t get the set up right for me and had either looked to work on a 3-4-3 system to use regularly and so will take time to perfect

Or

He gave Sheffield United too much respect and he matched up with their unusual back three and over lapping centre backs.

But - once the players cross the line they are responsible. They’re paid big bucks, their not naive lower league journeymen playing above themselves now.

They should see that and react accordingly and not looking for their safety blanket of blaming the manager.

And did exactly that with them

Turned them into dead balls.

That free kick at the end, from there, was never in a million years going to go in.

A dink into the far post with about 10 players all runing towards the United goal would have been better.

Anybody, including a defender could have got a touch and put it in.

Roll on the City home game.
I'm not going.

I am still furious with Fraser - that was crying out for Rico to smash it around the wall, or at the very least roll it across to Lerma.

Not only was it an atrocious free kick height and speed wise, he didnt even find either side of the goal, had it been on target.

No more so than when defending a free kick two minutes from time. Its no good pointing.

Having looked forward to the start of the season that was just an awful unimaginative performance. Nothing like having you optimism bubble burst right at the beginning. We started off the pace, United chance within the first minute , and never managed to get ourselves going. United were physical, professional and bang up for a fight. We were lazy, slow and dull. Ramsdale had a decent start to his premier League career, mepham scored his first goal, cook and Ake average, billing looked assured and had a fine shot well saved. ( A midfielder that likes a shot, finally), lerma was busy. Fraser and Smith were poor, Wilson could've nipped off for a lie down and I wouldn't have noticed he'd gone , king tried all the tricks when we just needed the basics and look dejected all afternoon.
United played their game plan well and thoroughly deserved their point, however, an earlier change by Eddie and we would have been saying we got away with that one. As for our free kicks, seriously how many of you got excited at the end , a free kick on the edge of the box should be a chance but not with our lot. We haven't got a free kick taker in the team. The only one who may have made a good effort of it was sat on the bench because Eddie wasn't brave enough to bring him on.
Still on to the next one and Villa ain't going to be a walk in the park.

Agree, apart from we do have a free kick taker, Rico. Only problem was that wee man wouldn't let him take one all afternoon - Rico looked well fed up by the end.

I’m also not joining in the Rico bashing scapegoat rubbish . Let’s give the bloke a chance before he’s completely written off eh ...as others have said far more annoyed with the rubbish Fraser served up yesterday ..that free kick at the end is where we expect our stars to show up and at the very least get the ball on feckin target .

In their defence I do think we come up against some teams at completely the wrong time. I thought yesterday was a bit like the Cardiff match after the Sala death and Leicester after they're owner died. Team and supporters both really pumped up and probably performing above their normal level. I half expected a draw before we even kicked off and by the end was just glad it wasn't a loss. I only streamed yesterday's game but mostly all you could hear was the Utd supporters and it was obviously a much bigger game for them.

Away fans will always be louder on camera. Not enough grounds have dedicated singing areas (which is good as it's a bit cringe) so the TV companies always put mics near the away fans as travelling support guaranteed to make more noise than home family area

The 3 up top did not work, they need to interchange there positions to move the defenders around which they did not, they just held there positions, but I think that’s been one of are problems for the last couple of years, don’t know if it’s a training problem or they just not interested

Ah, thanks. The tv coverage and commentary was also very focused on their fans as, I suppose, they were the big story for the day.

Nil mentioned in his match report that the team added up to lesser than its individual parts. I think we probably measured up equal to our individual parts yesterday.
Where as normally our ability to be so much more than ours induvidual parts is what serves us so well.
It wasn’t a team performance, midfield did well enough I thought for there bit but those efforts alone can’t make it click.
All in all it just didn’t gel.
Having said that Sheffield United did their part very well to stop us from finding space and getting the momentum going, so some credit there, but when things don’t work we sometimes look a bit down on ourselves and lack the energy that’s required in this league to ‘crack the nut’.
Definately miss Brooksy big time. When he was electric last season we had a great run, when he tailed off so did we. He’s very good at breaking a challenge and then surging with the ball which then just frees things up for the others,

Sorry but I don’t think this applies anymore and I personally find it a rather patronising way to describe us. In our first PL season fair enough, possibly our 2nd too. The reality is we now have an extremely talented squad for this level reflecting the millions which have, on the whole, been wisely spent.

Ok, no worries, you don’t have to be sorry !
Can you explain why you find it patronising? Just asking... do you think that as individual players the team don’t get enough credit ? Because I don’t mean to discredit any one. The team have done amazingly well in my eyes.

I kind of think it’s an easy narrative to make to see we are a small club who’s success is based on hard work and endeavour rather than their actual football skills. I dislike the “punching above their weight” remarks for similar reasons.

FWIW I called out Danny Mills on this forum last week for similar comments about Sheffield Utd

Agreed ! Let’s put the league 1 team playing above themselves to bed shall we and start judging the team by the millions that have been spent to build this next generation ...Steve Cook and Fraser were the only league one players on the pitch ( was Adam Smith a league 1 loan ?) ..... only the management and fans come from league 1 now .
