VAR

I know I'll get called out for quoting somebody else, but I agree with this from Danny Baker:

"People who still defend f***ing #VAR. Like smug bores who when you get parking ticket say "Ah yes well what you've not taken into account that you can only park here between 12.30 and 1.05 on bank holidays except when theres an R in the month in which case you need form B5734..."

I am not sure how much communication there us between ref and VAR as today Atkinson was just standing there finger to ear whilst talking to the players ..

Didn't seem to focus on chatting to the VAR ref .

Another fiasco this weekend.
The lino flags for offside when Firmino scores, and as he was so quick and looked well offside I doubt that anyone in the ground would have questioned the decision. Then it went to VAR that clearly showed he was level with the defender when the ball was kicked but they disallowed the goal anyway! You couldn't make it up.
As for Everton vs Spurs - what a complete and utter shambles. Martin Atkinson looked on the verge of a nervous breakdown at the end of that game.
Time to end the whole stupid experiment and restore responsibility to the match officials on the pitch, and just accept that they're human just like the players and can't be expected to get it right 100% of the time.

Yep. Two clear choices. Back to the man on the pitch with his infallibility but we all know where we stand or the rugby version with the ref handing power back to a studio with slo-mo and a very visible clear process of getting the decisions right where the referees accept they will be over ruled.
These will work (although give me the first any day of the week) anything in the middle will never work. You can’t bring in a system to make things either black or white but implement it in a way it’s always grey...

Seen a big shift in the media types defending VAR I recent weeks. Even Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker are now against it.

Although the latter of course can’t admit he’s totally wrong and says it’s the way the Premier League implement it and we should be using the monitor...

...of course when they do it’ll then be a huge surprise that that takes up more time and disrupts the flow of the game more...

I think that it's the flow of the game that we fans value the most (apart from our team winning of course!), and also what sets the beautiful game apart from the other sports that have used video assistance, all of which are much more stop/start. In those sports the action also tends to be more condensed or focussed in a smaller area, so making them more suitable for this type of monitoring.
It seems clear that at present the football authorities either don't share our appreciation of the flow of the game, or simply haven't recognised how important it is to the essence of football - or both.

I think Rugby has a similar flow to football and they seem to cope with VAR much better. At least the fans have more of a clue as to what is going on.

I still believe it should only be used to avoid real 'howlers' like hand of god. How this should be implemented I'm not sure. Perhaps Managers/Captains having 1 or 2 appeals would work?

I don't watch much rugby RH, but when I have done most of the infringements that the ref checked via his microphone seemed to have taken place when there was a huge pile of players just in front of him and the ball was going nowhere!

The way that VAR has been applied to football is just bizarre.

Just what is the point of having linesmen if robo-ref is going to override offside decisions down to the micro-pixel?

May as well send the 2nd and 3rd officials to the TV room to look for off the ball stuff that VAR is not dealing with.

Using rugby as an example, can you imagine them analysing every pass to see if it was 1mm forward in the run up to a try?

The reason why VAR does not adversely affect Rugby is 100% in its application. It's tailored around the flow of the game. Not about getting millimeter accurate decisions, but spotting obvious reasons why a try shouldn't be awarded.
