VAR

VAR was not tested properly and no demonstrable benefits were shown before it was launched. No apparent process exists from the point of view of the people in the ground and no accountability has to be shown for decisions that are made. I thought the first Newcastle goal was offside but have no means of checking duirng the match or subsequently. Many other decisions are made each match day on a similar basis and they are not improving the experience. Does anyone know if the FA have published how its introduction will be evaluated?

Seen a big shift in the media types defending VAR I recent weeks. Even Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker are now against it.

Although the latter of course can’t admit he’s totally wrong and says it’s the way the Premier League implement it and we should be using the monitor...

...of course when they do it’ll then be a huge surprise that that takes up more time and disrupts the flow of the game more...

Three and a half minutes to see how they can disallow a Sheffield United goal, 20 seconds to see how they can allow a Liverpool goal. Something fishy here.

City have a penalty instead of the first Liverpool goal if they use the pitch side monitor there... It’s so blatant and Riley is in the VAR room as well so he’s probably decided it’s not a handball as well some how??

It is beyond a joke how poor it has been.

So Man City should be able to gain a penalty from their own hand ball?

And the game should lose the drama of the penalty appeal and seconds later score down the other end.

That sounds fun.

Come off it that’s a blatant handball, he moves his hand towards it, it’s parallel with the floor when it hits ffs.

Edit to say the ref shouldn’t need VAR because it was so blatant.

Missing the point of the ref missing a stone wall hand ball 5 yards in front of him. I can only put it down to being biased, the booing of the away team is probably getting to him. Refs are intimidated too easily at Anfield.

Old handball rule it’s not deliberate so it’s not a penalty.

New handball rule the attacking side can’t gain an advantage from a handball so it’s not a penalty.

Apparently the official reason given by PL is because AA’s hand wasn’t in an unnatural position, so either they’ve decided that Silva’s wasn’t a hand ball or they’ve completely missed it.

There's another thing that I think is big issue with VAR, which I didn't think about or notice until recent weeks.
The mandate the lino's have been given that if in doubt about the offside then don't put your flag up works as it should when the ball ends up in the back in the net (let's ignore the pros and cons of VAR for offside for now).
But what about when it doesn't end up in a goal? The second Newcastle goal yesterday, the attack that led to the corner, all the Bournemouth defenders appealed for an offside - I haven't seen any replays as to whether this was on or off, but if it was just offside, the lino may have not given it in case Newcastle scored and then would have VAR to rule out if needed. But as it wasn't a goal Newcastle got a second chance and duly scored. (Like I said haven't seen the replay so this may be irrelevant for this goal, but have noticed it happen for a few corners, both for and against us in the past few games).
I'm not for one second saying we should VAR every single time this happens or remove VAR just because of this, it's just an issue I've noticed since the lino's have been told to do this.
Before the season started I was all for VAR, and I still think there is a place for it in some way - but certainly not the current format. Aubemayang's goal against Man Utd is the exact use for VAR, a massive blunder by the lino fixed by modern technology.

Arm in an unnatural position is deliberate and handball under the current interpretations.

So why was the reason for not giving it from PL that Alexander-Arnolds hand was not in an unnatural position? They have either missed the Bernado Silva handball entirely or decided it's ok.

It's horseshit, Mike Riley has to go.

The problem with yesterday's game was had TAA not handled the ball, Sterling would probably have scored and the goal been disallowed because of Silva's handball moments earlier. Similarly if a penalty had been awarded it would/should have been overturned.
The ref inexplicably missed both so the game continued and a goal was scored at the other end. It would have been harsh, although probably a correct decision, to disallow the goal and award a free kick to Liverpool in their own penalty area - but that would never happen.
The Liverpool goal was scored on the back of a deliberate handball which the ref should have seen and this scenario proved that VAR is no better than relying purely on the pitch side officials.

Its worse. The moments created when a goal is scored is being ruined.
