Jordon Ibe

Anyone can be surrounded by advisors but that doesn't mean those advisors are informed, intelligent, or in it for the right reason.

Take Fraser; I'm still of the view he has been listening to bad advice, probably from an agent and quite possibly from family too... and, of course, that's been a roaring success!

I'd reckon most footballers are surrounded by people who are looking to earn off them. I doubt Ibe has one advisor focused on trying to support his mental health.
Too true. Im sure that there are many unscrupulous agents who are just looking for their big paycheck, not just the players. With regards to Ibe, he may not have a mental health advisor but id be suprised if the club didn't. What we dont know is how Ibe reacts to any of the advice hes given nor do we know the influence his circle of friends have on him. One thing is for certain he needs to wake up before he blows everyrhing

...What seems suspicious to me is how it was a vague statement after his second driving infraction and didn't form part of his defence for the original offence. He already had 11 points on his license when he did it...

I understand that thinking in isolation but when you look at his 'poor decision making' in other aspects of his life he's clearly all over the place.

I'm not sure that realising you have a problem happens as an on/off light switch moment. More likely it's gradual and pointed out by others initially.

...The club has a psychologist which has worked with him for, I think, 4 years or so now you'd think that any legitimate mental health issues would've been identified and used as part of his defence...

That's possible. However they're sports psychologists and not psychiatrists; they're overseeing about 40 players; and, just like you can't make an alcoholic recognise the problem or stop drinking, a player doesn't have to accept he has a mental health problem or deal with it.

If football clubs were truly forgiving and supportive places we'd have several openly gay players but, despite the law of averages, there's apparently none...

...Personally, and I fully appreciate this is all speculative, painting Ibe as a victim to me on balance feels more like media training from his agent after a series of high profile incidents at a sensitive time in his contract.

A quick look online suggests his parents do his deals. Certainly they looked after his affairs when joined Liverpool and went on loan to Derby. A paper interview quoted him as saying 'I don't believe in agents'.

That probably leaves us with more questions than answers.

Sorry but the statement '...he’s played the mental health card recently...' only has one context and one implication.

Also, the idea that continually taking a series of self damaging actions - that a thoughtful and caring club and manager couldn't correct - can only be 'poor stupidity' and not a mental health issue is ridiculous.

He keeps doing things that puts his career, lifestyle, family, etc at risk. That's not normal.

I’m not here to say he isn’t suffering from mental health problems and I apologise if it came across that way. I’m just purely saying you can’t break the law and say ‘sorry officer for driving without a licence it’s my mental health’ or ‘I’m allowed to go and get a haircut when the rest of the population can’t as I needed it for my mental health problems,’ it doesn’t wash. You also have to ask what came first the chicken or the egg? Is his mental health down to his actions or the other way around.

As I say, I sympathise if he is struggling and not speculating about it but if he really is the best thing to do is keep a low profile for himself and his families sake.

Sounds like the club won't rid of him as soon as possible.
"It is understood he was not due to return to training with the first team under the Premier League's Project Restart."

Eddie's ruthless streak on show here - good on him. I feel for Eddie who did his utmost to turn him into the player we all thought he could be. He and his staff have invested four years into trying to develop his game, giving him opportunities ahead of others despite turning in a series of poor performance season after season, and he repays the club by acting like a moron off the field and bringing the club into disrepute with his ridiculous antics. Good riddance.

I’m not sure this is an example of Eddie being ruthless. I think any club would released him if he was out of contract. In fact he’d likely be released without the off field shenanigans.

Every signing is a gamble. He may well have had a good character reference at 20. He won’t be the last to lose his way. Other players go the other way. Believe Stanislas is a good example.

I’m pleased he’s off but like most of the reasonable people on here I wish him luck and hope he can turn his life around and get his career back on track.

A talented footballer that is wasting his potential , he needs to sort himself out and get help. It would be a shame to see such a talent to be wasted however he wouldn't be the 1st

A moments for us, the goal when we beat Arsenal 2-1
3 goals in 78 games is hardly great.

In the first three months of his first season, Ibe was a regular in the starting eleven, but according to manager E Howe, he lacked consistency and was dropped to the bench. He returned to the starting lineup as one of 11 changes in the team for an FA Cup tie vs Millwall they lost 3–0. Howe said afterwards that Ibe "hasn't been a regular in the team and that will be a disappointment for him and for us. I still feel there's a lot of potential in there, but obviously he's got to fulfil that when he gets chances like today."

Back to a club in London no doubt.
Lets hope he can get his career back on the road again.

Exactly this. I don't think anyone wishes him ill and he's obviously going through a very tough patch in his life. He's fortunate in that he'll definitely get a contract in at least the second tier of English football and hopefully he can use the time between now and then to get himself mentally back on track.

Look, I know you didn't mean to be nasty but how does someone suffering from mental health problems know how or when to keep a low profile?

Ibe often appears incapable of making sensible decisions, so why think he'll suddenly do 'the right thing' now?

The bigger picture is that you, us, people generally, can't use logic when trying to assess another person's choices, mental health issue or not.

Everybody is wired differently, you can't project your values, processes, etc onto someone else.

Just because you think you know the difference between right and wrong, and even if the other person professes to know the same, that doesn't mean they'll actually do the right thing and they might not even be able to help themselves in doing the wrong thing.

Of course, it is possible he's a piss-taker but ask yourself, why would someone, anyone, spend four years at a club intentionally and steadily dismantling their own career, reputation and prospects?

There's arrogant and cocky but Ibe's been on a self-destruct mission, which is very different.

He doesn't come over as arrogant or cocky on AFCB videos, and people who have met him seem to have found him to be quite pleasant, but he does seem to have a talent for football that he somehow can't properly activate - there is something missing there that would normally push someone on to achieve their potential. He seems a bit like a quality car with lots of top features and equipment but with a broken clutch that no one is able to repair. He's still young and I for one hope he finds somewhere and someone who can turn him into the proper and successful footballer that he could still be.

I'm certainly not suggesting that football clubs are forgiving and supportive places. I can imagine some are absolutely horrendous but at that level, you have people dedicated to helping you fit in and maintain a good mental state.

I think it's safe to say on the balance of probability there are players with issues including their sexuality who aren't out but are in regular discussion with their support staff about it.

By comparison, there's been plenty of ex and current players coming out about mental health issues. Neither should be taboo but sexuality seems to be vastly more so.

Fair enough about the agent stuff, I didn't do the due diligence to check that. When I say "media training" I mean saying stuff to placate the public. The classic "Disappointing result, support incredible. We go again" type of stuff.

I guess my judgement fairly or otherwise rests on mental health not being used in his defence. The ignorant spoilt footballer defence they used was far less sympathetic.

While it's not impossible that mental health issues weren't discovered during the 4 years at the club by the staff, his parents/agents or any of his peers the timing of his announcement seems to be both close to his contract expiry and at a time when other players have also used mental health as an explanation for poor decisions.

From the balance of what is in the public domain I feel he is using

You’ve missed my point entirely, I’m saying you can’t break the law and say it’s down to your mental health and get away with it, which I’m not saying he is doing I’m saying you can’t use it as a reason.

For example today he’s telling the press not to ‘feed off crumbs’ on his social media when he’s had a haircut, he’s said he didn’t know it was wrong to do so (surely between him and the man cutting his hair who I believe was a professional barber judging by the overall he was wearing) they knew it was wrong?

I’m sure I read he had sought counselling since his driving ban and hopefully that is helping him out but he can’t start blaming the press for jumping on his back when several other footballers have also been called out (Grealish, Walker etc).

Hair today gone tomorrow.
I‘m currently on my third self-inflicted lockdown haircut and I’m looking sharp. Jordon’s cut can be achieved with a cheap set of clippers off Amazon so no idea why he needs a hairdresser other than to show how rebellious and dope he is. I’d respectfully suggest that for somebody in his position, demonstrating how rebellious he is, is absolutely the last thing he should be doing. Just when I thought he couldn’t do anything more to eff up his career he comes up with this ! He seems to be an asshat of the highest order and when reality finally hits him, unfortunately it will be far too late for him to turn things around.
