Steve Cook

West Ham now linked to signing him.

You can see the West Ham owners salivating at the idea of signing a player in the last year of his contract thinking they can get him for pork scratchings and a turn on the pool table.

Our problem is, because they can't recruit from somewhere else it may create some pressure situations with players.
I’m not sure you can describe a report in the daily star as a ‘link’ tbh. I’ve never known them to get a single one right.

This is a rumour, nothing more. I post them as I always like the transfer stuff (I know and accept many hate it) but the reality is there's little to nothing in the vast majority of them.

Otherwise Smith would be at West Ham. Lewis Cook would be at Leeds. David Brooks would be at Man Utd. Josh King would be at PSG. Begovic would be at AC Milan. Rico would be somewhere back in Spain. Billing would be at Fulham (I think it was). Gosling would be in Turkey. And probably some more that I've forgotten.
They would be all at other clubs. We would hv no AFCB and end up supporting the team next door!

I hadn't realised S.Cook was in the last year of his contract... Has his bad games but on the whole pretty solid at the back for us, and is currently Captain... Surely, with 313 games under his belt in Red and black, we should be looking to get him to pen a new contract soon? Even a 2 year deal...?

I thought Tindall was perhaps a little too quick in his dismissals of both Franno and Surman (Especially Surman)... I just hope he is not too quick to completely rid us of all the 'old guard' players...

its not like cook struggles to get in the 11 like Francis and Surman did though. Surman must have only made a couple of league appearances last season. Unless Cook doesn’t want to stay (can’t see how) then hopefully it’s all under control

Well if he moved to a PL club at the end of his contract he'd earn more and play at a higher level.

Him and Adam Smith both surely have to be likely candidates that will run their contracts down this season rather than sign a new deal as they'd both probably get deals at lower half PL clubs fairly easily. Especially as they wouldn't try and claim they should get £100k/week.

Yep I agree.

We are looking very thin on numbers, but not thin on quality with the core 13 or 14.

Lose 4 through injury and all of a sudden we're in a crisis, due to having no cover.

It can make or break you financially I guess if the squad is too big, but it can ruin your season very quickly as well if you spread yourself too thin.

Given the positive start, you'd think a couple of additions would give Tindall some backing from the board.

The fact that we were in the PL only a few months ago suggests there isn't much moolah in the pot.

Surman and Francis would make our squad look a fair bit stronger than as it stands today.

...would suggest that ANY of our players are up for sale if bids come in that the club feel they want?

Plenty of quality in our ranks that could play in The PL...King....Smith..S Cook...Kelly...Rico...Lerma....L Cook....Danjuma....even Gosling could do a job!

I will leave out a few like Stacey...Billing...Stanislas....Mepham....Simpson...and Solanke

Funny. I would put Stacey as one of our best players this season.

Would make sense for Cookie to wait until the end of the season. If we go up, he could sign a new contract with (us) a PL club.
Otherwise, could look at PL clubs.

Are some of the squad invisible to you. To say we only have 13/14 core players, and thin on quality is incomprehensible to me.

Perhaps you would like to sort the current first team into the 3 groups so that I can be enlightened. Group 1 - core with quality, Group 2 - core lacking quality, Group 3 - others with a first team number but not in your core. Feel free to put King in Group 3 if you've written him off and assume we won't replace with any quality.

Looking forward to seeing who you think is in Group 3.

Understand strength of feeling for Cook, however if we don't go up this year then surely he will have failed to show the premier league quality that would get him a move back next year. I know he can't single handedly get us promoted but it will be hard for him make a case for lower PL move if he isn't captaining a defense that gets lots of clean sheets in a winning team.

Thus regardless of the outcome of this year he is likely to want/prefer a new contract, whatever division we are in. In contrast, if we get promoted I can see the club wanting to upgrade the defensive line so we are stronger than last year, which might be at his expense. It could be quite mercenary.

Therefore, if his pay is most important to him, then moving now is his best option. I hope he stays but let's not overlook the need for a right sided CB to replace him next year as first choice if we get the success for which we hope.

may be harder, but he'll still get a move. scouts will be aware of his attributes, what he could bring to the table and as long as he plays well, it won;t hinder any move to a PL team.

otherwise, why did a club like City sign Ake?? Played in a defence that consistently had a poor goals against record, then eventually relegated.

most teams have players that are capable of playing at a better level, they won;t get missed by professional scouts if they perform consistently well, regardless of whether the team is near the top or bottom of the league
