Yorkshire Not Been A Happy Hunting Ground

After our disappointing 2-3 home defeat against Preston N E on Tuesday night our side travel up to Yorkshire, this season so far it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground so far. This game is an early evening start at 5.30 pm on Friday, it is being shown live on Sky TV.

The Barnsley manager is Valérien Ismael from France, he joined them in the October of this year. He said Barnsley play football the way he likes, high-pressing, intensity, vertical game. His previous club was LASK Linz in Austria. He took over from the Austrian Gerhard Struber who joined New York Red Bulls. In the Summer Barnsley signed seven players, plus one on loan.

Their home record so far this season, they started the season with a home defeat 0-1 against Luton Town. This was followed by two drawn games, first 0-0 against Coventry City and then 2-2 against Bristol City. Then Barnsley had their first win 3-0 against QPR, this was followed with two more wins 1-0 win against Watford and 2-0 against Nottingham Forest. In their last home game they went down by the only goal of the game scored by Brentford. Their away record has seen a 0-2 at Derby County. Two draws, 2-2 at Stoke City and 1-1 in London against Millwall. They have lost 2-0 at Reading, 2-1 up in the North East against Middlesbrough. In Wales they went down 3-0 at Cardiff City and 2-1 against Blackburn Rovers. Their latest game against Birmingham City finished with a win 1-2.

The last time our team travelled up to Yorkshire to play Barnsley was in the 2013-14 season in the Championship, Steve Cook’s injury time winner and the only goal of the game to give the Cherries 3 points and the double over Barnsley. In the home game AFCB also won 1-0 with the winning goal scored by Marc Pugh in the 76th minute.

In all our away league games against Barnsley, AFCB have W 4, D 5, L 11.

All competitions home and away, AFCB have W 13, D 13, L 16.

Barnsley Team News
Their left back Ben Williams has been out with a cruciate ligament injury. Mike Bähre in midfield out with ankle injury.

Barnsley Player To Watch
Cauley Woodrow their number 9, scored five goals this season, three of them at home. Also has three assists.

AFCB Team News
Jack Stacey could be out for up to two months with a knee ligament injury. Arnaut Danjuma didn’t feature in the squad for our game on Tuesday night, out with a slight hamstring strain. Hopefully he will be available for the Barnsley game. Jefferson Lerma suspended after picking up fifth yellow against Preston. Diego Rico on four yellows

AFCB Player To Watch
We have missed Arnaut Danjuma in our team, plus his goals and a constant danger down the wing.

As a lower team that tries to play a bit more expansively (I think), hopefully we’ll get more joy out of this game.

Having said that Preston were pretty expansive as well. Idk.

...whoever JT picks for this game they will need to be sharper than yesterday and be more positve from the off. Hopefully we haven't had any knocks from this game to reduce options any further? JT could shake it up a bit by starting the likes of Surridge,Gosling and Billing who should be fresher than some. Lewis Cook hopefully had no reactions from his injury, the problem could be whether to rest Jefferson Lerma (who has had a busy last few weeks tbf)..Danjuma should probably get a place if okay...could also be that Steve Cook needs a one game break?

I would go with :

Begovic

Smith (although he has to start showing some form soon)
Mepham (needs gametime to become more solid IMO)
Kelly (better at CB, certainly quicker than Cook)
Rico (another like Smith who needs to get his form back)

L Cook (CM covering the back four?)

Danjuma
Gosling (Decent engine as they say)
Billing (time to come alive Phil)
Brooks

Solanke

Bench; Travers/Surridge/Riquelme/Simpson/Oboforh/S Cook/Stanislas/Anthony/Kilkenny/Zemura

Do wonder if we will see King popping up anytime soon?

Might be folly to rest two of our more robust players, but it could pay dividends for the next match?

Jeff suspended isn't he?

Jefferson Lerma started off the season with his customary yellow card.

Then he had a run of seven (one cup) games without a booking.

In our last six games he has received four yellows.

.........Back to basic's imo.........
...........................................Bego

..............Mepham...........Cook.................Rico

...Smith.............Billing........Cook....................Kelly

.............Brooks...............Danjuma.................Stan

Not a fan of 343 but we cant carry on defending like we have with a 4..........Rico back to where he's looked like the best defender in the league and the best finisher we have upfront.......have Solanke......King....and Surridge on the bench to give us the option of changing to 433 or 4231 with fresh legs in the second half ..........we just need a solid first half ...nothing spectacular .

In the paper recently they apparently play the same pressing game as Southampton 4 2 2 2. May not give us time to settle to play our passing game.

It’s a tough one to call, I agree that a back to basics approach is needed but I’m just not convinced that this line up will provide enough creativity. We really are held back by our defenders not being very good at defending. I believe that Surridge deserves to play, so maybe if Danjuma not fit then Brooks as a ten with 2 up front? Then I don’t think we’d have anywhere near enough threat on the wings, but if we go 4-4-2 I can see us getting torn to shreds. I feel a bit sorry for Tindal tbh, I think he’s almost damned if he does damned if he doesn’t here. But who knows, maybe this Carter Vickers bloke will come in and be the out and out defender that we desperately need.

Where is Carter-Vickers?? Both S Cook and Mepham so wobbly v PNE that maybe CCV should be given his chance.
