They would have had to have been. They wouldn’t want him if they had only been watching recently.
My view is, just because he announced publicly he wanted to stay on Friday doesn't mean he wasn't telling his agent "get me out of here".
I seem to recall John Spicer put in a couple of half hearted performances and had a "migraine/bad back" to stop him being cuptied. He was"committed to the club" all the time he was engineering his move away. : )

Thankfully we can now end this chapter and move on. King had stopped playing for us both mentally and physically a year ago. Now his spot can be taken by a player who actually wants to be a part of team

We lose a great player (our top ever PL goalscorer) and gain a player who was good 6 years ago but whose whole ethos was running and work ethic but is now 34 and without pace. Great

The guy wanted out and has been part of a squad that hasn't looked like they give a toss for over a year. A great player for us but we desperately need a shake up and he wasn't the answer to our problems.
