European Super League

Huff and puff but nothing will happen and in a few years those same big 6 will still win most of the prem titles and will still be in ESL. All the organizations and fans talk a lot and puff their chests out but in the end they will do as they are told and be back buying merchandise and tickets in droves

True, they are run as ‘Vereine’ or members clubs. The league is also run completely differently to many, burdened with about 20 levels of checks and balances which have to be satisfied before any major changes can be approved. If they don’t want their clubs involved, it won’t be allowed to happen. There will be no compromise solution ( unlike possibly from the PL ), clubs will have to stay in or leave completely. That will be a tough nut for the ESL to crack. Bayern und Dortmund would have to put all of their eggs into one ESL-shaped basket, which would seem to be a huge risk !

If they are that great how come one club still manages to completely dominate financially and buy all of the best players in Germany?

I’m not sure how you can prevent that Derek, without making the sport artificial, like adding penalty ballast to successful teams in motor racing, it would just suck.
Bayern have just been very successful, more successful than most. The Germans do have a solid framework of rules and regulations though and Germans are sticklers for their rules.
IMO they are much less likely to do anything just for the money. They seem to put a genuine emphasis on ‘for the sake of the game’ unlike our lot, the Italians and the Spanish, who will willingly drop their drawers for a dollar more.

I think the German league clubs could actually stand united against this, it wouldn’t surprise me at all !

They could have a salary cap if they were that intent on 'the sake of the game'.

Haven’t seen it mentioned but pretty sure Barcelona and Madrid couldn’t do this without a member vote as their fans are members, unless the plan is to get kicked out of everything so they have no choice.

Give it time, there are still 3 “founding clubs” spots left for anyone with a soul to sell.
2. Stop forgetting Wednesday!

Madrid will get the vote by promising to sell Eden Hazard if they vote for the ESL. :hehe:

Isn't what you've described the definition of the word club? It sounds like it. Wider ownership, many stakeholders across the whole bandwidth of interested parties and most importantly a loud voice for the only group of permanent members, namely the fans.

True, I am also trying to figure out how Bayern will get in on this - they must be one of the 3 otherwise this super league will be without one of the best (and richest) european teams

I’m sure once the season ends and the dust settles Bayern and PSG will be onboard

Yes. Verein = club.

Just that in the UK for example ‘football club’ does not mean that it is still a club in the sense that it was originally. It is now most probably a registered company !

Germans love their ‘Vereine’ they even have them for saving money
- ‘Sparvereine’ !

A Verein or club in Germany is a separate economic entity, different tax rules apply for Vereine, board meetings are obligatory and certain posts are obligatory too. There are a lot of laws which Vereine have to adhere to. For me as a ‘Tommy’, joining a Verein for the first time was a real eye opener ! I couldn’t believe how seriously they took all of the administration and the number of times you were asked to vote on something. Trust me, Germans take their Vereine and the running thereof extremely seriously !

The fans of the English 'big six' don't appear to be impressed with this at all. If they can join together and make a stand by refusing to attend any matches (if and when we are allowed) that would be a massive statement. Maybe even more so...what if the players of these clubs finally grew a pair and refused to play in this new league? It would only be effective if it was backed by every player but it would bring this whole idea to a grinding halt within minutes.

If this new league doesn't happen it will be interesting to see how much damage has been done to the relationship with the other 14 PL teams. I agree with some of the posts above that this could actually end up being a chance to reset English football where it finally dawns on the authorities that football is absolutely nothing without the fans. The last 12 months have shown that to be true for every game in all 4 divisions.

Funny listening to Sky and JC and GN...must say think that Steve Parish talks a lot of sense though..one thing that is true though is that only Man Utd and Liverpool are really the big clubs!

If this really doesn’t get off the ground at all, I sincerely hope that the PL applies sanctions against the six PL clubs who signed up for it.
It will be embarrassing enough for them to have to come crawling back after their great project failed and it would be a fantastic opportunity for the PL to finally put them well and truly back in their box. Make them grovel, take away some of the privileges they have enjoyed in the past. Just do something to teach them a bloody good lesson. That would be very sweet indeed !
