AFC Bournemouth v Brentford - Championship Play-Off Semi-Final 1st Leg

I don't know how else to explain it. There's no points at stake, winning the game doesn't matter, winning the tie matters. We're much more likely to score from a corner than concede so you should go for it. Same with attacking in open play towards the end - they should try and make it 2-0 rather than protect a meaningless win.

I do get it, just don’t agree. It’s an aggregate score not points at stake, hence 1-0 is better than 1-1, besides more often than not we are woeful at set pieces. We defended well all game, why send everyone forward? Not worth the risk.

I’m obviously missing something. The risk of conceding in the 93rd minute and heading to Brentford at 1-1 is worth it? Or see out the game, keep a clean sheet and go there 1-0?
Whats the difference between the last minute of this game and the first minute of the second leg?

Psychologically I would much rather go into the dressing room at half time 1-0 than have conceded just before the whistle.

However I get the point, and was thinking the same thing. Yeah keep Mepham back but put it in the box and see what happens. We still have 90 mins.

I think that's it. I'm not saying be reckless just that we should at least try to score in that situation. If away goals counted you might understand it because there's much more risk but they don't.

Have you seen our corners?

So you think we should defend for 90 minutes at brentford and not try to score?

Look if we're 1 nil up the second leg and we get a corner with minutes to go then fine time waste ....do what you have to do but not in the first leg!......if we get a corner in the first minute of the second leg would we do the same?
Completely agree. We were essentially holding on to a one goal lead with over ninety minutes still to play. It was a ridiculous thing to do. The way we approached the second half after going one up made no sense. We were in the ascendancy and then just sat back and held on to what we had. You could see the mind set of the players completely changed. It’s like they didn’t understand it is a two legged tie.

Psychological that we can keep them out a whole game? We go into the game with a 1-0 lead? All we need to do is keep another clean sheet?

I could go on....
Surely there's as much chance of conceding from our own corner in the first minute of the second leg as their was at the end of this game.....should we be this cowardly against a side like Brentford?

So you think we should defend for 90 minutes at brentford and not try to score?
Its a judgement call that Woodgate made. He clearly wanted to do everything to preserve the big psycholgical effect of going to Brentford with a lead. Was it right or wrong no one will ever know. Personally I reckon EH would have done the same, many managers would have. It's a bit frustrating for us supporters as we just want to see a second goal.

I'm with Blandford on this I think... Whilst I struggled with us looking like we were leaving both Meps and Kelly up for a corner, I agree that we looked tired, we were under the cosh and they looked more and more dangerous attacking as the game went on...

Yes, the game is played over two legs and yes, this is only half time, but you have to 'read the room'... we looked like we could concede so seeing the game out and taking a 1-0 into Saturday was better then risking throwing everyone up to grab a second and then being hit on the break and losing the slightest bit of advantage we currently hold...

It's the difference between taking the lead itnto Saturday and knowing you only need to not concede and going into Saturday thinking we need to both not concede and score...
