Lewis Cook

Puzzling as I thought the high earners from the PL days would have their contracts run down or be sold.

Great news though as he is PL quality.

He’s the sort of player that I think most managers at this level would want to try and build the team around on paper as a young core, along with players like Kelly and Solanke. Good news.

No it's not really a defensive role....It's more the 'quarter back role' that Kilkenny plays at the moment...... of our midfielders only Lewis and Gavin are really suited to it .
I agree that while Pearson is inarguably one of the best players in his role in league, he doesn’t really seem to fit our current system that well. Might be proven wrong though.

makes me also think had he not have been injured he would have been ahead of Kelly in the captain pecking order

Yes I know what you mean. Lewis on his day is a solid PL standard player and I imagine his last contract was befitting of that status, and I doubt he's taken significant reduction. I thought he'd be more likely to keep his options open, and we'd have half an eye on getting the wage bill down and seeing how his injury recovery went.

That both parties have come to an agreement speaks a) to Cook's confidence in the club, and b) about afcb's confidence in his fitness and also financially being able to afford and commit to such a player in a position we're well stacked.

Yes exactly, good points. Really positive news for all those reasons. Hardly a sign this season is PL or bust.

I don't imagine he'd have any issues finding another top championship club or lower PL club on a very good wage and signing on fee if he wanted to let his contract run down.

I wonder if they are thinking of offloading Jeff in January. Him and Cook highest wage earners by a distance and despite how good he is you'd have to say we could afford to lose a central midfielder.

Not a chance. He wouldn’t be playing every game if that was the case, look at Cook. Don’t believe we’d be stupid enough to sell any first team players in January.

Yet they are paying the wages of six central midfielders. They need to sell someone in my opinion and Jeff is on £50k a week. Steve Cook will go which will then mean Jeff's wages would nearly be as much as the rest put together.

1) how do you know what the others are paid?
2)would it really be that much more disaster out from a financial point of view to wait until the summer to sell?
just don’t see why we’d sell in Jan if still in a good position. Doesn’t make any sense

I agree with Waz here. If we’re still in a good position January, it would be crazy to sell anyone that’s in SP’s first XI regardless of how much they supposedly earn per week.

1. We've had this debate before about player wages but they've been reported on this site before. You only have to look at the totals to know that the priority has been selling or renegotiating the ages of the highest earners. Everyone down to Solanke has either been sold or renegotiated other than Cook and Lerma.

2. I don't know but it's clearly been a priority. Personally I think we could lose Jeff and not be seriously depleted.

From a football perspective maybe but the bean counters must be looking at how many central midfielders we have.

I expect he knows how much everyone is earning because there are a lot of know it all’s on here.
