Summer transfers

The issue in terms of potential losses is the contract situations a number of our players are in:

Solanke
Kelly
Lerma

all in their last year

I imagine them being here next season will depend on them signing new ones, if they don’t then for the good of the club they need to be sold you would imagine. I really can’t see us letting 60m worth of talent leave for free in a year.

Lerma will choose to extend. Solanke and Kelly who knows?

I honestly can't see Lerma doing anything but staying with us. If he had any intention of leaving it would have been after our relegation from the PL but he stuck with us. I'd guess he's very settled, enjoying his football and life in general. Oh, and premier League football to look forward to next season

Bournemouth is pretty international too, so easy for him and his partner to make Spanish speaking friends.

Don’t forget we have got Stanislas under contract for another season - Would love it if he could get back to full fitness for a period of games, but admittedly we can’t count on it being that way so another RWF is needed
So that 6 games covered

It's too early, I know, but the alternative is concentrating on work, so here goes...

Where do we think we need to strengthen in the summer?

Personally, I'd go with what we have up front, on the left, and in CM. Solanke, Moore and Lowe are good enough in attack, for me, and I think we're well enough stocked on the left with Anthony, Dembele (and Lowe). Lerma and Cook are PL quality and I'd be happy with Pearson and Kilkenny as back up. We can obviously reassess all those positions in Jan.

I think the real areas we need to strengthen are on the right, behind the striker, and in defence. For me, Christie is not quite enough to be our main man on the right, and Brooks will obviously take time to come back. I also think we need competition for Phil Bill, so a new starting RWF and another starting/rotation option in AM I see as essential.

In defence, I think we'll need two CBs, one of which could be Phillips. Kelly, Phillips, Mepham, Hill, and another should be enough to start the season with. I also think we need a new starting RB. As good as Smith is, he's the wrong side of 30 and I'm not convinced Stacey is a strong enough option. On the left, I'd be happy starting with Zemura, but he'll need competition. So that's two CBs, a starting RB, and rotational LB.

Overall, that leaves us with a shopping list of a starting RWF, a rotational AM, 2x CBs, a starting RB, rotational LB, and, of course, a back-up keeper. So 7 signings in all, a couple of which could be loans. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me and should leave us with enough to build training ground...

Edited to add, the caveat on the above is assuming we don't lose anyone.
Think the AM option is sorted. Have heard Rothwell is a done deal.

Difficult summer decisions to be made by the manager and some players?
I would want to keep:
Travers
Smith
Kelly
Phillips
Mepham
Zemura
Christie
Lerma
Billing
Cook
Anthony
Solanke
Dembele
Moore
Brooks

doubts over
Woodman
Stacey
Cahill
Stanislas
Lowe
Marcondes
Pearson
Laird
Davis
Kilkenny
Saydee
Moriah-Welsh
Dennis
Cantwell
Brady

which means some serious shopping
Like from the championship:
O’Brien
Spence
Bowler
Rothwell
Samba
Worrall
Masengo

but could see some loan stars from the prem ?

I think so. Cantwell was an interesting option when he became available, and a flexible player to have covering a few positions, but as it turned out a stop gap and experiment. Rothwell is a better (more specific) fit for Parker's system, and is available on transfer.

Not to say Rothwell is more talented player, cos Cantwell has bags of talent, just in terms of tactical fit.

Seems Adam Smith is being underestimated imo. One of the first names on the team sheet for me next season. A wealth of experience and still has loads to offer in skill and pace.

I don't disagree with that, and maybe I'm being too hard on Smith. I just think relying on him exclusively is a bit of a risk, given the potential for injury. I think we could do with another starting option as competition / support and am not sure Stacey is quite enough. Happy to be proven wrong on that front though.

I think if we’re being completely honest there are quite a few players currently in the squad who are decent championship players but not quite PL level. Probably needed to depart:

Chris Mepham- just hasn’t really worked for him here, I think there is a player in there somewhere but he has looked pretty shaky at times even at Championship level. Whenever you think he might have turned a corner he seems to go back to square one. Think he needs a run of games for the sake of his career, won’t get that here.

Gary Cahill- looked classy at the beginning of the season but the longer the season went on the more vulnerable he began to look. Struggled badly with lack of pace at times even at this level, these issues would be significantly amplified at PL level. I think he will retire anyway to be honest.

Jack Stacy- just don’t think he is defensively good enough for the top level, even at this level his lapses in concentration cost us in certain games, in the PL this will be exposed even more ruthlessly. It’s a shame because he’s got something to offer from an attacking perspective but if we’re serious about survival I don’t think that we can rely on him. The fact that Parker currently rates him as third choice would suggest that he feels the same.

Ben Pearson- good solid championship player but short of the required standard for PL, even as a squad player. Think he lacks the mobility needed for the top level.

Gavin Kilkenny- needs to play for the sake of his career, pure and simple. He is an incredible talent and could easily get a loan to a championship side. Let the boy go out and get some games.

Marcondes- this one pains me because I really like Emiliano. He’s clearly a great lad and a real team player, often travelling to away games to support the lads when not selected for the squad. He also made some very vital and underrated contributions as a substitute throughout the season. Reality is though if he’s not getting a look in at this level then there is no point in him sticking around in the PL.

Stanislas- I have no doubt he’s talented enough to contribute when fit, the harsh reality though is that we can’t afford to use up one of our squad spaces in somebody so unreliable, we are going to need to maximise our resources to have a chance. Selecting Stan for a 25 man squad is essentially selecting a 24 man squad.

Brady- see Stanislas.

On the fence

Jemal Lowe- another one that pains me a bit as again I really like him, but I just can’t shake the feeling that his level is as a solid and reliable championship forward. Having said that, he is a player who would probably be content to be a squad player so perhaps he is worth keeping on as an option.

As a matter of interest, when have you ever been honest, completely or not? Incidentally did you ever pay the money to the Air Ambulance?

I thought not.
