Non - Cost of Living

I always worked the rough cost on petrol in gallons.

As mentioned earlier around town it was 30 miles to the gallon and on a journey around 40 miles to a gallon, easier to work out cost than by litres.

All down to what we were/are used to.

Surprised on the yougov survey on the figures on the two younger age groups where some young ones were happy with imperial measures.

Maybe in sympathy with parents/grandparents. :grinning:

It's the wording of the question. Should they be allowed? Well they are allowed now so why would you support a ban. Ask if they should be able to sell in only pounds and ounces and you'll get your true answer. It's a bunch of nonsense.

Smoke and mirrors to distract and bemuse. A dead cat.

Nostalgics distracted because they want to go back to the good old days.

Sensible people cant believe the idiocy of it.

Both sets of people distracted. Job done.

Anyone care to have their doctor work out their dose of medication in fluid ounces per pound ?

Doctor : How much do you weigh ?

Patient : 14 stone 11 pounds

Doctor : So that is 0.15 fluid ounces per pound. 14 pounds to a stone so.... Oh forget it, take two paracetamol.

You might have misinterpreted the proposal. They aren't going to introduce any sort of criminalisation of metric measures in the way that previous governments introduced criminalisation of imperial measures.

What this proposed repeal is going to do is to mean that it can no longer be a criminal offence for a shopkeeper to post a big notice "Apples 80p per pound" (or possibly "Apple's 80p per pound) in his shop. As the use of metric measures is being neither criminalised nor discouraged, it should not have any effect on the doctor.

Maybe there are good reasons why people who prefer to buy in pounds should be discouraged from doing so, but surely not to the extent of making it a criminal offence.

No government criminalised imperial measeures. Otherwise how can I buy a pint of beer?
What they said was that you had to display weights and measure in metric. You are perfectly at libery to also display lbs and ounces, put crowns on your beer glasses and sell straight bananas if you want

What they criminalised was the advertising of imperial prices more prominently than metric, and the usage of imperial scales. Beer and milk were specific exceptions.

Some people think it's a good thing that a greengrocer who puts up an big advertising board in pounds should get prosecuted. I don't think that should ever have been made a criminal offence - why on earth should it be?

Do you not think protecting the consumer by ensuring consistent weights and measures is important? You have to pick one measurement system and most people understand metric, or at least can easily understand it without trying to remember nonsensical imperial measurements.

The greengrocer you are talking about was acting like an entitled pr1ck.

He said he was going to ignore the law, ignored the law and was charged as a result.

Hed had the benefit of a five year coolong off period after the 1999 act but chose to ignore it.

I remember it well as we sold fruit and veg in one of our shops at the time. The irony is that he insisted in selling bananas in lbs when people just buy some bananas and then pay what they cost.

Why do you have to pick one system? Modern electric scales can easily cope with pounds or with kilograms. Greengrocers can choose one or other. Customers can choose one or other. Milk is one of the exceptions that can be sold either in pints or in litres - have there been large scale reports of problems being caused by this over the past 20 years? Problems large enough that it would have been better to make it a criminal offence to use one or other of these measurements?

I really don't know why people are so determined that there should be criminality attached to imperial measures. The step from "I don't like it" to "It should be banned" should be a lot bigger than this.

We need consistent labeling so that people know exactly what they are buying. Nutritional information, calories, allergies, etc. all very important and signs of how far we've come. Having consistent labeling has improved the costumer's understanding of products.

There's nothing stopping people from labeling in imperial they just have to use metric to allow easier comparison. You ask about problems, there isn't any, because we've had consistency for years now. What is it that you think you're missing out on?

My greengrocer doesn't label his apples. His apples don't say how many calories they have and they don't give allergen information. Perhaps people still don't understand apples and would get a better idea of what they are if they were properly labelled?

What I am missing out on is the old proverb about "In England, everything is allowed except what is expressly prohibited" etc. There are plenty of people who think that people should not be allowed to make bad choices and things like using the "wrong" weight system is a bad choice so it should be criminalised. Heading towards the "Everything is prohibited except what is expressly allowed" school.

I've always tended towards the idea that the government should not interfere except where necessary, especially when creating new criminal offences, and I have never been able to understand or agree with those who want criminal offences created for the most trivial of objects.

Why do you have a go on Google and try to work out why food needs to be properly labeled. Trivial indeed.
