Non Extinction Rebellion

True, global population has increased dramatically over the last 100 years. However, the majority of those people contribute little or nothing to climate change. South Sudan has the highest population growth rate in Africa, yet has per person carbon emissions of 0.3 tonnes per year. By contrast, the the average person in the UK emits 8.5 tonnes per year (2010 figures)

Sure mate ,the human population has doubled in the last 50 odd years animal life has halved but it’s not too many people that are the problem it’s how many feckin tones of carbon emissions a Westerner emits compared to a hut dweller in the Sudan .
Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better .

Sky News

After several "non-violent civil disobedience" protests in recent days, Extinction Rebellion group announced on Thursday that it planned to "raise the bar" at the UK's busiest airport, which is expected to be used by almost 250,000 people today.

In a statement, the group said: "There is a deep remorse for those whose holiday and family plans will be disrupted.

It is not our intention to cause further separation.

"However, the aviation industry needs to be targeted and we are all aware of the deep, structural change that needs to come."

Actress Emma Thompson joined the protests in London after taking a 5,400-mile flight from Los Angeles in the US.

To be honest no. It’s simply a cheap shot from the media to divert attention from the real issue. The media are desperate to silence the climate change debate as it doesn’t suit their agenda and the majority of the public fall for these tactics

I wonder if she understands the irony of that flight?

its quite insignificant in the scheme of things

But surely that is the issue?

Everything we individually do is insignificant in the grand scheme of things but put all those individual things together and it becomes significant.

Who is going to be the first to say 'I'm not doing that' so that the rest of the world can follow suit?

I am certainly no angel in this; I drive a car, I fly off on holiday, I eat meat and I am coming from Manchester to Bournemouth to watch us play this weekend (yay!) but at some stage someone has got to take a stand.

Flying half way round the world to make an environment statement does not strike me as the start of that movement.

Exactly my point.

Defeats their argument when one of the speakers in London addressing the protesters comes all that way on a flight to either Heathrow which was mentioned as being a target or some other airport.

They seem to be going the wrong way about this and the general public who they need support from are the ones who have suffered and not the politicians who should be their target, who some may well be away on holiday.

Instead of getting public support, it looks like it could be the complete opposite.

Having said that Billy I think the general approach by the Extinction Rebellion has been brilliant.

It has been a very peaceful and passive protest, which the police openly admit that they are finding very difficult to deal with, hence the reason it has gone on so long. (I note in Paris the police have used pepper spray to disperse similar protests overnight.)

I think ( but I’m open to correction) that the police are not allowed to use force when the demonstrations are peaceful.

In her speech, Emma Thompson said her generation has failed young people. That is a message that needs to be said but of course will be uncomfortable for people of that generation and in particular the media elites.

Ideally we’d all cut down on necessary flights. Yes of course that is going to help. But we need urgent actions from politicians globally. By focusing on just one incident of whataboutery, the media are trying to let politicians of the hook and manipulate the public into ignoring the issue too.

Emma Thompson is just one individual getting there by some means available. She could have come by boat ....what does that matter!
Hypocrisy is what many of us do as means to an end.....look at yourselves!
The Protest is about what its about in the long term.......but we dont wanna worry ourselves about that do we ? No ...white is white and black is black. The weather this weekend is fine so that is all that matters! Pigeon holes. Dont forget...ALL Brighton and Watford fans are Evil. HA! What joke this Forum can be!

Isn’t this also defeating your own argument?

A leading Extinction Rebellion activist who said that “air travel should only be used in emergencies” lives a jet-set lifestyle, taking skiing holidays, visiting global landmarks and enjoying walks along palm-tree lined paths.

Will any of you change the way you travel when going on holiday?

My wife and I normally go by Eurostar and other trains when we go to Europe. See some wonderful scenery that way.

But in the UK if travelling up to London, the last two times have been by coach because of the unreliability of the new company since they got the franchise.

An utterly facile individual who commented that she has come over in the hope of getting arrested on her 60th birthday. Well doesn’t that put everything into perspective. Unbelievable really.
