England Euro 2020

Not even going to bother reading the thread, but we made a final for the first time in my lifetime and like the last WC semi dominated the first half but didn't get the second goal.

A lot learned by a lot of young players for next year.

Agree. We’ve moved on so far over the past three years. Reaching the final is a massive achievement and step forward and even against a side that have been undefeated in 3 years and well drilled, we took them all the way.

Southgate has been class. Would I want to see that football week in week out over a full season? No. But in a tournament it very nearly managed to be enough to bring it home.

Build on that with a bit more attacking flair and who knows what we can do next year.

Disappointing after a decent start but the game changed visibly in the Italians favour and Gareth did nothing to change it and the inevitable goal came. If I could see it why couldn't Gareth?? The changes the Italians were better than ours. Their game management was better than ours. Our ' penalty' substitutions didn't work. Naive Southgate was out thought by a wily Maldini. Sh1t happens, we move on. Its the world cup next year

We’re ****************. Losing Euro finalists. The shittest team going. No excuse etc etc

We're not, we just played like it ;).

I'm starting to calm down now. My real gripe is that i said to my wife when Sancho and Rashford came on that Southgate's lost the plot... Hey ho, both miss their penalties and then the poor kid Sako is sent to save us.

Well that and the passive, dull football makes my blood boil, albeit it's marginally better than it has been for the past 15-20 years. Reminds me of Groves.

Without being biased Italy did deserve to win and were the better team, we shat ourselves after the early goal and did nothing after, if we had gone at them more they did have vulnerabilties and to sum up the joke of bringing Sancho, Saka and Rashford on for pens they all miss.

I havent read the thread, but this is the whole point. He has a plethora of attacking flair on the bench. His choice again not to play them. His tactics are always negative and it cost us again. Mancini world class player gets it right. Southgate sits there and watches a winning position dissipate again. Still lots of people seem to be 'proud'.

So much for the 'wank' ..'coming home' garbage ( I won't even use capital letters for that crap.)
It actually 'came home' as such when 'mushers' from Wareham kicked a pigs bladder across the fields against Corfe 'crofters'. ..in the Purbeck 'Scramble and Scrumpy cup' ...in the year 13 oh blob!

Think Southgate tried to be too clever and it backfired badly…no way Saka and Henderson should have been put on when we have Rashford and Grealish on the bench…poor tactics and judgement IMO …but hey ho roll on August!

Lets face it England are a young team and will learn a lot from this defeat.
Hearing that Kane never touched the ball in the Italien penalty area tells us that Southgate again was happy to play negative football.
The better team won on the day,
Well done Italy.

Let me just swing it another way...to balance sensitivity, truth and whatever...
At least this squad managed to beat a Whole Germany..not just a Half Germany as we did in 66....
..you didn't expect me to come up with that eh? :smoke:

Agree, very interesting. I'm guessing most people singing that song are over 50, which is pretty sad. There are lots of things to like about football culture I feel, but again that coming from an oldie. Maybe the younger generations have a different view.

I think it seems to be normal for managers /coaches going back decades ,to see a completely different set up /match than us in the stands or watching TV.
Remember my old dad saying in the late 70's,early 80's "what match were they watching?"
Even more recently it's become a go to phrase for poor performances, including our very own EH.

If it were up to me, I'd replace Southgate tomorrow with Howe, a manager who would actually use our attacking options. But I am massively biased.

Its not up to me, and it's hard to argue with a semi final and a final lost only on pens. The FA will quite understandably stick with him. And we could do worse. I just don't think he will ever get the best out of this attacking generation.

They will have more opportunities though. Young squad who will all be back next year and most of whom will be here for 10 years yet.
