Clock is ticking …

Not at all. I’m suggesting that as good as Dom has been this season there will be moments when he is out of form and that place may become up for grabs, every squad needs players who are capable of stepping into the first team role. All of the players I listed would compete with Dom and would be available for well under 10m. There may also be moments where we want to play two strikers, depending on the opposition.
I hope you are right, I just can't see someone who is good enough to compete costing less than £15m, let alone £10m, bearing in mind we sold someone for £5m (or something like that). Seriously hope I am wrong.

Pretty sure SP is finding this as frustrating as us. Is difficult because when players know they are likely to be back up, they are less likely to want to come. That limits you somewhat unless it's a striker who can also play in other positions.

Dom will definitely give this season his all as you say but there are so many uncontrollables: injury, illness or isolation so yes I agree that we need a back up. With hindsight, perhaps we should have got a player in before selling Surridge but with the financial pressure of the moment, I suspect there was a risk of losing out on the Surridge sale and having more strikers than needed.
Totally agree, anyone good enough to join us at the level we want to have in reserve could probably guarantee themselves a start with most of the teams in the bottom half of the division.

They either aren't motivated enough to want to play every week or so big-headed that they already think they can force their way into our team to be a regular, despite the fact their market value says otherwise.

If we admit it, everyone wants to get someone on a lowly wage that the market values at £3m who turns out to be worth £15-£20m. Hard to see that happening.

I don't necessarily disagree, but this seems to assume we're after an established striker in their prime. If we instead signed someone early in their career, who has the potential to unseat Dom but is also raw and keen to improve, there's every reason they would want to come here. SP seems to have a reputation (whether warranted or not, I don't really know) for developing young players so we could be an attractive option. It seems Rogers thought so. You could say Saydee meets that description, but it seems we think we can find better.

There aren't so many clubs around our current level that have money available whereas there are a lot of clubs across Europe hurting badly financially after the last 18 months. If it's true that we do have some cash we're willing to spend then that isn't too bad a hand to play. There's always money for a move to the PL but for players a rung down from there it might be harder for a club to cash in right now.

If there is no obvious L1 target ready to make a step up and shadow Dom then surely all that money we invested in a European scouting network must have identified a potential striker?

I get what people are saying about someone not wanting to come and play second fiddle but, equally, they'd be moving to a club where they'd certainly get minutes. DS can't play every minute of every match and, as has been said, he may pick up an injury, suspension or lose form.

A young player backing themselves to dislodge him at a club vying to get into the PL for next season. Do well here and the eyes of much bigger fish would be on them.

I'd imagine there must be some decent candidates who fancy those odds out there. Have we scouted them though?

Interestingly I was listening to a podcast the other day that had Rob Dickie on....he was asked who the most talented player he ever played with was and he said Patrick Roberts....I wasn't sure who he was tbh so I looked him up......would be strange if he signed for us a few days later!

Don’t need to spend more than 3m to get a decent player at this level.
I agree it's not impossible to pay £3m for a player that can turn out to be worth it. But there's a lot of luck involved as there are as many frogs as princes for that sum. You are asking a lot of recruitment to spend the minimum and expect an impact.

If and when we do, we as well thanking our lucky stars, we should wonder why nobody else thought they were worth outbidding us with £4m, as plenty need a decent striker more than we need a decent back up striker.

If he's good, why let him go for nada? Presumably, his wages aren't all that high?
