Taking The Knee

When did anyone last here any racist abuse at DC? 11 years ST holder I genuinely can’t think of anything around me.

It’s all an act of righteousness, which is ridiculous, we are all there for the same reason! Watch the cherries and support them.

You might not notice it. I was with an Asian mate the other day going in to Brass Haus, I was about 20m behind him and my other white mate, white mate let in fine, they told my Asian mate no shorts, I saw it happen, I (white) get there also in shorts and then he changes his tact to needing to see ID.

Racism is everywhere, funnily enough the only people that deny it tend to be white.

That’s not true.
That’s not true. It was an American footballer in 2016 who knelt during the national anthem. See below.

The gesture originated in a 2016 American football game, during which Colin Kaepernick and his 49ers teammate Eric Reid chose to kneel during the playing of the US national anthem, to call attention to the issues of racial inequality and police brutality.

"After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, ... during the anthem, as a peaceful protest," said Reid. "We chose to kneel because it's a respectful gesture. I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy“

Which happened 4 years before Floyd died and no one bent the knee in this country during those 4 years for a privileged american football player they don't know in a sport they don't care about in another country.
Kaerpernick must have taken an arrow to the knee and got a bit sore as he hasn't done much of that since Trump left and the people paying him to do it had to save a few pennies for COVID.

The reason there is knee bending in English football is the consequence of Floyd and BLM.
At least some sensible black players like Zaha saw through the charade and immorality of Floyd and BLM because they're both awful ambassadors towards racial justice. I don't kneel for the Queen and I don't kneel for horrible degenerates from America.

Ignoring individuals and talking purely about crowds and their reaction.

For my relatively short (compared to this board!) time on this planet following football I've seen "Kick it off", "Respect", "No room for racism", etc which have all had relatively positive responses from crowds.

Maybe I missed something but only taking the knee has caused controversy. Millwall went from booing the gesture one week to applauding a linked arm anti-racism gesture a week later.

Does anyone any more? Under what scenarios does this whole dog whistle symbol (on either side, will or won’t) actually apply?

I expect your stance, like that of Raab, is never likely to be put to the test but hey, makes a great sound bite.
All soundbite.

That's odd because I've been going since 1984 and I've seen plenty.

I remember Cox and brisset getting some vile stick from our own 'supporters'.
Thankfully those types of options are either dying out or at least the racist element feel less comfortable in shouting them out, which is after all the point of taking the knee.

It's a way of showing people that this sort of behaviour is no longer acceptable.

If you are so angry with life that you are upset about a 30 second gesture then I'd suggest you have much bigger problems than having someone clap an anti racist stance.
You're quite right, thankfully those opinions are from a small minority.

I think everyone knows the behaviour isn't acceptable, knee or no knee.

I'm not angry, and didn't say I was. Sports isn't the place for political gestures, as the England team saw back in the 30s.

Back with the old misconception. Opposing racism is not political gesturing.

You think that football can exist in it's own racist world without reference to the wider community then?

There's a world of difference between wanting to improve things for the better and being forced to give a nazi salute.

I’ve yet to see a convincing argument against taking the knee. I really can’t see how 10-15 seconds before a game is such a wind up for some people.

I'd take a differing position, Stan.

Money for health care, housing, education, countering substance abuse, entrepreneurial opportunities ..................... those are ways to counter racism that will lead to meaningful change.

Taking down statues, changing street names, taking a knee, truth and reconciliation day (local to us in Canada) ....... feel good gestures which will not produce any sustainable differences in attitudes.

My view, anyway ...........

I think it was a good idea and different to hear the players speak on the topic before the game pity they were drowned out by the music.

Read the DM article then read comments below. How many completely missed the point as to why our players are stopping? Bizarre.
