I think this puts Defoe's wages into context. The bottom line is when you're a free agent that value goes to the player rather than another club.
But it still might make a teammate feel slightly put out if he’s on a lower wage simply because a transfer fee was paid. Although I do believe most players get a percentage of their transfer fee (as long as they didn’t request a transfer) so maybe that evens it up?

I guess they all have the option of waiting their contract out to do the same thing. Presumably a trade off between the money they could get and the risk of a career threatening injury right when their contract is nearing completion. It would be interesting to know how insurance works in these situations.
