Can see protracted negotiations if the clubs aren't being realistic.

Not realky in anyone's interest in drawing things out... depending how important a bit more money is. So Clubs can't get too silly about things, assuming player wants to join us.

Exactly, there will be other targets. The amount of cash available doesn't change the price of a player.

Not necessarily true. No way half the players Chelsea signed were worth the fee paid but clubs like Brighton knew they were loaded and desperate and drove a hard bargain. In any negotiation, the desperation and wealth of one side is absolutely a factor.

Desperation yes, wealth no. Unless the club is run by a fool.

I guess the best test of your theory is did Brighton massively overpay for the players they replaced the ones they sold to Chelsea?
 
According to this, our initial offer was €12m plus bonuses. They want €15-20m. He only has one year left on his contract so they can't squeeze too hard.

At those numbers I'd guess this is one that'll happen.
 
On a related note, as I posted on another thread with a link to a player in France, French clubs have a big shortfall in their tv deal to make up this summer so pretty much all of them will need to make a sale or two. That weakens their hand even further.
 
It’s always going to be a bit tough for us because players will always hang on a bit to see if anyone bigger comes in…
