AFC Bournemouth v Barnsley

First Game Back After International Break

Our first game back after the international break is a home game at Dean Court on Saturday at 3 pm against Barnsley. Barnsley had a very good 2020-21 season under Valerian Ismael finishing in 5th place one place and 1 point ahead of the Cherries. Ismael was appointed the new manager of newly relegated from the Premier League, West Brom.

In their search for a manager to replace Valerian Ismael who had done a very good job as Barnsley manager with his style of football, Barnsley appointed the Austrian Markus Schopp. He was formerly in charge at Austrian Bundesliga side TSV Hartberg. He was their manager from July 2018 until he took the Barnsley job. As the season progresses it will be interesting to see what style of football his side will play. After watching their game away at QPR they looked a good footballing side with some swift movements and skilful play in the first half and went in 0-2 up at half-time. The second half was a different story and the hosts fought back to finish 2-2. Barnsley lost an important player when Ismael signed his former captain and midfield general, Alex Mowatt who was out of contract at Barnsley, also lost the services of striker Daryl Dike who was on loan. Barnsley have signed a few players as well as losing a few.

In their first five Championship games of the season Barnsley’s first game was away at Cardiff City, it finished in a 1-1 draw. Their first home game was against Coventry City and it ended 1-0 in the home sides favour and is Barnsley’s only win so far this season. The next game was also at home and this time they were on the wrong end of the only goal scored and lost 0-1 to Luton Town. Next they were away to Queen Park Rangers (mentioned above) which ended 2-2. Their most recent game was a 1-1 draw at home against Birmingham City.

Last season at Dean Court against Barnsley, the game ended in 2-3 defeat for AFCB. AFCB were 2-1 in the lead at half-time with goals from Arnaut Danjuma and Dominic Solanke, with Barnsley’s goal coming from Michal Helik. The second half Barnsley added two further goals from Dominic Frieser and substitute Carlton Morris scored the winner.

In our home league games against Barnsley, AFCB have W 9, D 7, L 5.
All competitions, AFCB have W 14, D 13, L 17.

AFCB Team News
Junior Stanislas, Adam Smith and Lewis Cook all missed the last game at Hull. Mark Travers and Philip Billing were absent through illness.

AFCB Player To Watch
Eyes will be on our latest signings Ryan Christie and Jamal Lowe, if not starting, expect the players to come off the bench at some time in the game. Christie played 19 minutes for Scotland on Tuesday against Austria and last Saturday played the whole game.

Barnsley Team News
Defender Liam Kitching is suspended. Players probably unavailable due to injury are centre back Mads Andersen and full back Jordan Williams. Up front they will be missing Carlton Morris who has been out with a knee injury and not expected back Their centre back Michal Helik played the full game for Poland on Sunday and against England on Wednesday, he came on in the 79th minute. Helik is an important centre back for Barnsley, scores goals as well and if his centre back partner Andersen is missing, they need Helik to start on Saturday.

Barnsley Player To Watch
Last season striker Cauley Woodrow was their leading scorer with 12 goals. In midfield Dominic Frieser has 2 goals to his name this season and Callum Styles another important player in midfield for Barnsley.

Team selection wise, Gary Cahill has to play if he is match ready (which he should be by now.) His inclusion could prove the difference between holding onto leads and surrendering them this season.

Wonder if there’s a reason he couldn’t be included in the under 21s game the other day? Perhaps the rules have changed but I’m sure we have used them previously for players getting back upto speed?

These Cherries are doing fine so far...we need to keep a few of the unripe young ones in there..to keep a 'keen cutting edge' i.e. players aspiring to become regulars etc...way to go...because if we start dropping them off ..sure as sh*t is brown...we will plummet!

I could see the likes of Mepham, Christie, Killkenny who all played international games perhaps on the bench. Travers and Billing to come back in from illness? Lowe has training for a week or more now, chuck him in...

Travers
Stacey Cahill* Kelly Zemura
Pearson Lerma
Brooks Billing Lowe
Solanke

*or Cook of course, but think Parker would prefer Cahill?

Nyland, Mepham, Davis, Killkenny, Marcondes, Christie, Anthony

One of Cook, Cahill, Mepham, and Kelly will not even make the squad on Saturday... Will be very telling, and sad if that person is Cook...

I cannot see Cahill and Cook ever being partnered unless there is no other choice...

It will also be interesting to see how Parker will keep the youngsters integrated in the team/squad... I hope for their sakes that now we have bolstered a little and injured players are coming back, they are not now just discarded... For their progression they need to keep in or around the squad. We've seen they are all good enough when called upon so for me, there is no reason they should not be part of a rotation system...

Cookie likely to miss out I guess given recent reports.

I understand your sentiment on the younger players, but I am not sure we can have our cake and eat it. How many will support a weakened team in the short term that drops points in the hope that by end of season we have a better squad.

In and around is too far removed from playing. Rotating them onto the bench won't develop them. The reality is they have to win a place on merit and when they lose their place know the road back is really hard, particularly in positions not often subbed.

Seems like they will be dishing out some hard tackles.
Hot stat: Going into this round of fixtures, Bournemouth are joint-bottom for the number of Championship yellow cards (three), whilst Barnsley are ranked joint-second (14).

But that's what I'm saying... I think we've seen they are good enough to hold their own in this division... each and every one of them. I agree I think they should earn their place... No way should they just walk into the side, but I don't think we've necessarily been stronger with the inclusion of say Lerma over Kilkenny, or Pearson...

The problem we started to see was that all of them, in the side, at the same time, probably made us slightly weaker due to inexperience, but individually they are ready to be used... IMO...

Selection for Barnsley … surely Cahill, Christie and Lowe all play? And can we afford both Pearson and Lerma?

Travers
Stacey Cahill Kelly Zamura
Pearson
Brooks Christie Billing Lowe
Solanke

Will be shocked if Cook is in the squad, whether you think he should be or not, Parker/the club clearly doesn’t rate him/want him here. He is 5th choice centre back now. Christie won’t start, tbh I’d even be surprised if he’s on the bench, although not out of the question completely. I’d guess he’ll probably have had one day training with the group. He’ll go ‘safe’ and play Pearson Lerma and Billing. Same team as Hull probably with the only question being Cahill or Mepham.

Replying to Waz … with both Pearson and Lerma we’re short of midfield creativity. And why not play Lowe, when we’re short of firepower? Plus, Morgan Rogers will surely get on at some point.

I agree, wasn’t saying what I would do, was saying what I think Parker will do.
