Can’t wait

The opening day is always one for optimism.

Stepping up a gear from optimism to demented wishful thinking, we may never have a better opportunity to win a Champions League place.

Manchester City are likely to be banned from next year’s competition meaning fifth slot this year could very well be good enough to win a CL place.

Manchester United have a muppet for a manager, a CEO who knows next to nothing about football, and owners who couldn’t care less about on-field success provided the money keeps rolling in from their official Philippines Chewing Gum Partners and the like.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea (TM) have a season long transfer ban and a manager with one season’s experience when, with a big budget and a generous dusting of loan starlets, he managed to steer Derby from sixth in the Championship to, er, sixth in the Championship. He does wear nice suits of course.

So let’s go all out for that fifth spot.
