Derby drink-driving

Two Derby players Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett arrested after crashing their cars Tuesday night, both found to be over the limit.
Richard Keogh was in the back of Lawrence's car, which hit a lamppost. Keogh suffered a 'serious' knee injury in the crash, that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

Derby put out a statement including: "The players were out as part of a scheduled team-building dinner with staff and while the majority of them acted responsibly and left at around 8pm and were not involved, a small group, including the team captain Richard Keogh, continued drinking into the night."
"They should have known when to stop and also ignored the opportunity to be driven home using cars laid on by the club, and chose to stay out. As a result of an alcohol-related incident, Richard Keogh has sustained a serious knee injury that will prevent him from playing until the end of the season. "

Wolfman out for the season

However, whilst not condoning anything....,,,
reading that seems to say that the club (and the cars home) scheduled the evening to end at 8.

Unless it was an afternoon sesh, there’s no way if you start people drinking at an early dinner everyone’s going to stop at 8.

The club must share at least some of the blame for this.

Poorly thought out and poorly executed.

Why should the club take the blame? it's not like the players can't afford a taxi.

They're not normal people, they extremely well paid professional athletes. If your coach tells you to stop at eight they should be able to stop at eight without a babysitter. 1980s style football larks just make players look extremely unprofessional now. The fact that this has potentially ended the career of one of them is a pretty rank outcome. The only positive is nobody else got hurt. I'd say it's 100% their fault, 0% the club.

Would seem that footballers are always absolved of taking responsibility.

On the pitch things go wrong, blame the manager.

Off the pitch things go wrong, blame the club.

...foolish players and you would think Keogh would know so much better in terms of his actions!

Nonsense. The blame starts and ends with the players.

Well richard keogh tried to give a false name to the police, but one recognised him, plus the others drove off after the accident, leaving one car behind. Only when they got to someone's house did they realise they'd left Keogh behind, so went back for him, then got nicked!

Plus keoghs bar bill was £2800

Wow, scumbags!

OK so no blame at all to the club for organising a piss-up (and yes it was a piss-up and the club knew it was because they’d arranged transport home), and then failing to ensure the players returned home in the transport provided at the time expected.

What part of my sentence

“ the club must share at least some of the blame for this”

or “poorly thought out and poorly executed??”.

do you Rob, Dave et al. disagree with, and why???

Clubs have these sort of evenings out all the time. I’ve heard plenty of ex-players on Sky saying that.

Assuming they aren’t lying - and why on earth would they lie - then it seems the vast majority pass off without incident. If 99% of professional footballers are capable of having a few drinks and getting a taxi home at a reasonable hour, why should Derby think any differently about their own players?
