Jack Stacey

I know nothing about him but could be an interesting option. We know that Luton play football the right way. So good back up to Smithy. We either sign someone better than Smithy, which would cost a load of money....or we get someone like this who would be prepared to wait for a chance but would be capable of doing the job still.

That’s my thoughts, we don’t need to sign anyone better than Smith, he’s first choice right back without a doubt, he just needs an able deputy in the absence of Francis.

Ideal option

That's advocating standing still, and if try to stand still in the PL you'll get relegated.

Every signing we make should be better than we have or be a young player who it's believed could develop to be better than we already have.

With us still being over the 25 man squad limit and further outgoings looking some way off at this stage, ideally Smith’s understudy would be an U21.

We don;t have to name these extra players in the squad, I know it's a waste of money but we can employ as many playing staff as we like, just means an incredibly star studded Hants Senior Cup this coming season

That’s true but realistically the players will go. Unfortunately if Mings and Arter are on our books in August and with squad still over 25, clubs will take advantage of the fact we are looking to offload and lower their bids.

Well of course, but just because we have players on the books isn't a good reason not to do business with genuine targets, not to aim at lower quality players simply because they're younger

My source tells me this one is happening and that Jack will be announced soon. He was wanted by Stoke, Nathan was his manager before at Luton, but has conceded to me that he's joining us. Very highly rated right back and will be a great signing.

Does Al know??

Luton fan on Twitter was talking about him earlier, said that he would excel at our club and he rates us and Eddie as the perfect place for him to go.

Whilst I kind of agree there are certain positions that you would think we already have the best possible player for (Ake, Smith, Fraser, Brooks, Wilson) and whilst we can spend millions on a player are they really going to dislodge those ahead of them?

Of course if we did sign this certain player he would very much be a back up and a player to develop as you say

I think the difference with a Full Back is that with the exception of GK, it’s the most specialist position on the field. It’s very rare to see a ‘Horses for Courses’ selection.

Take midfield for example. There is a whole variety of different roles for the same position - ball winner, box to box player, deep controller and playmaker. Similar with wingers - you can have playmaker wingers, hug the line and cross wingers, inverted wingers and goal scoring inside forward.

FB is one of the most physically demanding positions but the objective is always the same. Bomb up the flank in attack and quickly shut down the flank when possession is lost. A back up midfielder is always going to get game time depending on match situation or opposition. There isn’t really any tactical reasons to select a back up FB and that’s why it’s a tough position to recruit.
