Lloyd Kelly

The boo boys haven't had their way......he wants to join a bigger club....all players have ambition....good luck to him imo......the fact is as good a player as he is he's not a first choice CB for us and he's holding back the development of Kerkez as a LB.....I think it's best for both parties if he moves on.
Hmmm... I'm not so sure that is the only reason. It has been publicly stated that crowd reactions to certain players have had an effect on their decisions to leave. Kelly was treated very harshly by sections of our support for several games and is still getting sh*t. He was clearly f*cked off as until recently he never clapped fans when coming off to at end of games... Straight down the tunnel. No one wants to be where they are not wanted...

I too wish him all the best and of course, he's got ambition and wants to try his luck at another club... But the offer on the table by us would probably have been a sizeable one and you have to believe that being boo'd and jeered every time he touched the ball, by his own fans, had some sway in his decision not to sign...

I agree he should not have been playing ahead of Kerkez, but it's just as likely that we've seen less of Kelly because we all know he'll not be around next season as opposed to him not being first choice... Iraola seems to only play Kelly when he needs to...

Would you play him at cb ahead of Senesi?

Eddie isn't a bad alternative mind. He's the man that brought him to the PL so knows a great deal about him and his attributes.
If he can stay fit and get a decent run in the side, then definitely.
That tended not to be the case when Eddie had him previously, which probably frustrated the pair of them as much as it frustrated us at the time.

My only issue with this line of thought, is that IF he thought a handful of fogies at Dean Court occasionally moaning at him was so objectionable, then I'd suggest he might be in for a wake up call if and when he makes has one of his occasional brain farts in SJP in front of 50,000. Such is the ups and downs of playing for the bigger clubs.

Personally I think this whole issue has been way overblown.

I know I'll get lambasted for this but I feel his defending is nowhere near his former pacey full back self. On Saturday he never got near Mbeumo all game.
Sure, as I've said before, he'll be a loss due to his ability to cover both Full Back and Centre Back positions but let's be honest, he's not first choice at either.

Would you play him at cb ahead of Senesi?
I wouldn't be unhappy if I saw either of them line up... They both bring a slightly different style of play to the line up. I agree that Senesi probably shades the Iraola style of play with his aggressiveness, but both have good ability in the challenge, in the air and good passing range.

Kelly is also an exceptional LB...

I get this school of thought and I in no way am stupid enough to think he is off purely down to some vociferous fans that felt it necessary to boo their own player, just for laughs... I'm just saying it certainly didn't help matters.

I think we can sometimes underestimate how much comments can effect players, which in our tiny arena can very much be heard word for word... Probably not the case so much in bigger arenas...

I'm never happy if Senesi isn't playing....there are three players that are vital to how Iraola wants us to play and Senesi is one of them....we don't have the attacking threat and our press doesn't work when he's not playing....Senesi doesn't just shade it he's miles ahead of Kelly.....I'm not saying Kelly isn't a decent CB ....he'll be quality for another PL team....but he doesn't get into our first choice 11 as a CB.

Agree that in the center back position, Senesi is more key than Kelly.

But ideally we’d have both, with Lloyd in left back, as nobody in the squad is close to him there.

To be fair to him though, I can’t think of many players at Newcastle that have been jeered every time they touch the ball in a game. Sure, it only happened once, but I personally found it to be really embarrassing behaviour from a large group of our fans for no real reason.

What if Kelly wants to be a CB?...... Kerkez has to be our priority .....Playing Kelly at LB will hinder Kerkez's development.

He made the majority of his appearances in the Championship. 77/119. Is that because he was unfortunately injured a lot in the three EPL seasons? Or the manager preferring other options?

A bit of both tbh.....obviously we had Ake when he first came then he suffered with injuries.

I could be wrong but I've a feeling this happened earlier in the season at Newcastle to... Dan Burn.

I think he was having a rough patch and the fans wanted someone else to play. Livramento I think.

I can't speak for their fans in the ground, but if their online presence is anything to go by then you're quite right about Burn. He was getting singled out for stick during their dodgier runs of form this season.

It's surely the injuries. He's pretty much always been picked when available since he first broke into the side. Six managers found a place for him whenever they could. Poor injury record imo.

I agree with parts of this but not all. The boo boys haven’t “had their way” per se, he’s made his mind up to make the big money free transfer move as any player has an option to do. The boo boys won’t have helped but they haven’t made it happen.

The Senesi - Zabarnyi partnership has also blossomed this season and are our first choice combination at the back.

But Kelly is third choice and we’ve seen, third choice options often feature quite heavily. Chuck in Mepham who is also likely to move and that leaves us looking for two centre backs, because it’s far too early to have to be relying on Hill.

The Kerkez point I would disagree on, if it was Kelly holding him back we wouldn’t have seen Dango playing as left back quite so often. The only person holding Kerkez back, is Kerkez.

Dango has only played LB on four occasions ....Kerkez wasn't available for two of them and played as a winger in another.....not sure your point holds much water tbh....
