Match Report and MOM v Sheff Utd

We had what we had and plan B came against an unusual format. Fair credit to Sheff United in their positinal interchanges, The onus is to over come their threats. We didn't.

3 at the back ideal with Mings natural leader but he has gone, Smth Rico at wing back waiting for balls like] Stanias and Ibe but they are expensive luxuries and contributing very little, No leader on the pitch,

Ongoing no thank you to Ibe too many chances, Stan when fit doesn't fit our game eany more

We need workers not
trolers around like Ibe Stanislass, Too many believe the Pram Lesgyr hype but forgot it needs hardworking every game

. Have we gone stale?

I agree that the other players seem reluctant to use Rico as an option. No idea why. He is often very isolated, out on his wing and not being used. I can’t shake off the feeling that he hasn’t really adapted to the english game. He is not being sought but neither is he busting a gut to get involved. He always seems to be on the periphery and happy to go missing for long periods, almost as if he lacks confidence to seize the game. It’s a conundrum. I’m sure in Spain he was able to contribute so much more. I’m not sure how much more time Eddie will give him to make a difference although I’m not convinced it’s all Rico’s fault. He’s just not fitting in at the moment, for various reasons.

The problem is finding a creative midfielder through isn't it?.....there's not to many outside the top 6 .....we would have to be very lucky to find one in our price range tbf....we've always had a pretty static midfield and as you say our front men as well as our full backs/wing backs have to play well for us to win games no matter what formation we play.....they didn't play well today..but there's no point in us all moaning about what we haven't got.
Kilkenny!

I don't think it is. Lerma has plenty of creativity to his game and spent yesterday looking to make something happen. There just weren't runners off the ball.

Part of the problem is how SU defended in numbers. We've been more dangerous on the counter for a long time, but movement across/through the lines yesterday was almost nonexistent. Adam Smith was the only player making it happen.

Took most dead balls today

And did exactly that with them

Turned them into dead balls.

That free kick at the end, from there, was never in a million years going to go in.

A dink into the far post with about 10 players all runing towards the United goal would have been better.

Anybody, including a defender could have got a touch and put it in.

Roll on the City home game.
I'm not going.

Just watched Goals On Sunday.....they showed their goal...both Rico and Callum were pointing at their overlapping player before the kick was taken.... So who was to blame? The players for not reacting and re-organising themselves? Or management for not allowing them to react?

Hopefully when L Cook is back playing, he will provide that essential CM attacking role and partner Lerma and Billing in the midfield. Also, H Wilson and Kilkenny will be introduced to provide much needed attacking flair. All is not lost guys, we have got the necessary skills for a successful season.

Looking back at the game, I dont think it was the formation or individual players that lost us the game. Although we could have done with a number 10 type player starting. It was Blackadder Eddie Howe. We were leading and the game was ours to lose. There were clearly some tired legs on the field, so a raft of substitutions from the quality on the bench would have seemed obvious to Baldrick.

For me the disappointing thing is that we've had all the time since the fixtures were released to work out tactically how we were going to play against a team who would play with five across the back when we attacked. We were pretty clueless as to how to break them down. I think we only had two worthwhile shots on target.

What was the point of bringing Solanke on so late in the game? We should have changed tactics around the hour mark.

We didn't lose the game, in fact Blackadder Howe was winning the game until the 88th minute. If Baldrick's cunning plan was to use hindsight he could have just told them to track the runner.

Obviously, a game for differing opinions; I thought King did quite well and was the pick of the front three.

Ramsdale 6.5 made some smart stops but could have held at least one.

Mepham 5.5 Gets the extra half for his goal. Woeful shot wide 1st half, had some good moments but a fair few squeaky bum ones too.
Aké 6.5 was mostly solid. Out of position a few times.
Cook 7.5 probably MoM. That 2nd-half tackle by the East stand side-line, possibly saved a goal.

Rico 6 Getting far too much stick when he was the most accurate passer we had on the pitch. I'd prefer to see him taking the free kicks ahead of Fraser.
Lerma 6.5 Was pretty solid, although sold Billings a duff, 3 yard-pass in the 2nd-half that put us under pressure. Made a few good forward moves.
Billing 7.4 Looks composed on the ball, had a thunderous shot well saved and made some good tackles.
Smith 6.8 Welcome back. Seemed to get frustrated at our lack of creation and although forced to join in the passing back to the back three at times in the first-half, also went on a few runs and got stuck in.

King 7 Ran backwards, forwards, got stuck in, tackled and just needed to try a few shots.
Wilson 4 Don't know what was up with him today but every time the ball came forward, he ducked his head and either moved into his marker or moved his head out of the way. Offered no threat and was partially to blame for their goal.
Fraser 5 A poor game by his standard, got livelier in the 2nd-half but sporadically.

Howe 4 With both Daniels and Simpson on the bench, plus Solanke, Eddie should have gone to 4-4-2 at half-time. Wilson should have been off after 55' for Solanke. Kilkenny should have been on for Fraser after an hour.

Sharp reminder there's work to do....

A great summer's trading, the unexpected bonus of not losing any star players and inferior (on paper) opposition meant that Bournemouth fans skipped into Dean Court full of anticipation. They left grumbling with the same frustrations that dogged the season before. Sporadic individual form, odd tactics and indecisive substitutions meaning once again the team was lesser than it's individual parts and a scruffy plundered equaliser from perennial Championship hitman Billy Sharp nicked a late deserved point for the Blades.

Ramsdale was the answer to the question on most people's lips entering the ground - the young keeper winning the battle of 'not quite the full ticket' keepers to be given a chance to cement a place with Boruc able to give a demonstration of the most lethargic warm up ever around the 50th minute as he warmed the bench. With Danjuma the latest entry to the treatment room the forward line picked itself and the biggest oddity was Eddie's new 3-4-3 formation with Smith and Rico as wing backs. Billing made his debut in midfield - the only new signing of the five to make the cut.

It was the Blades who made the early running, not yet softened by cricket scores at Anfield and the Ethiad and looking like they still believe - rightly so on today's evidence of manipulating triangles neatly and defending well. Ramsdale was smart when Mepham was beaten too easily by a ball over the top and McGoldrick went clean through. Only 30 seconds were on the clock but it didn't offer any signs of a game packed with chances as the game settled into a lot of slo-mo football from both sides with little to report.

Bournemouth were labouring a little and looked to be finding their way around a wing-back system where Smith was far more prominent than Rico who I worry the players seem reluctant to give the ball to. We still look like a side that needs to break rather than play through teams with the lack of a clever ball manipulator (presumably soon to be H.Wilson) once again evident. When we did lure Sheffield United forwards enough to break - three times we picked the wrong options in great positions reminiscent of goals last year. Eddie looked very frustrated.

At the other end our defence was looking pretty solid with Ramsdale saving well on the couple of occasions it was breached and it all had an air of 'waiting for something to happen' even VAR refused to inject talking points by rejecting everything asked of it.

HT Bournemouth 0 Sheff U 0

The second half started the same way as the first - McGoldrick released in a good position, this time no save necessary as the ball flashed inches past the post. Once again the home teams' attacks looked like action replays and the ball circulated too often when good runs were made but missed. The Blades had more of the ball than the first half, the difference was Bournemouth didn't seem to be able to work the breaks as too often the ball out was sloppy.

It was a surprise there was a goal really but the home side did take the lead. The prelude was one of those 'great goals that never were' when Billing's absolute pile-driver of a 30 yarder was phenomenally finger tipped wide by Henderson. Like Gomez's save for Cook's overhead kick it denied a goal to remember for a long time. This got the crowd and the side finally going for a bit and when a free-kick was won out wide Billing headed it back across, Wilson's shot was saved and MEPHAM bundled home his first goal for the club.

There was a brief purple patch but Lerma and King had shots blocked before a familiar sight to home fans emerged. Bournemouth sat deeper and deeper, United suddenly started to believe, the three forwards became isolated and the question became would United fashion a chance or not. Fifteen minutes of attack and defence with no substitutes or tactical changes forthcoming. With two minutes to go the hammer blow was struck...… A quick free kick caught Rico asleep in the left channel and after Burnie McBurnieface's shot came back off Ake, veteran poacher SHARP bundled home an equaliser to set the travelling hoardes into ecstasy.

Bournemouth 1 Sheff U 1

Ramsdale 7 - Smart stops and generally safe

Mepham 6 - Scored (so got sponsors MOM) but thought he was average.
Cook 8 - Good tackling and strong marshalling.
Ake 7 - Normal slick show.

Smith 7 - Buzzed around and watchful defensively
Lerma 7 - Strong and masterful
Billing 7 - Encouraging athletic debut.
Rico 5 - Tried hard but just didn't gel and profligate in possession.

King 5 - One of his frustrating over playing days
Wilson 5 - Hold up play poor and very quiet/well marshalled
Fraser 5 - Didn't quite get his free role - some poor choices.

Verdict

A frustrating afternoon. I sometimes worry the more talented our squad gets the less it seems to gel. Eddies battle to replace the telepathic understanding of his promotion team is his biggest challenge every year and today was no different. It was all very safe and slow - not the qualities of any recent team's success.

The positives were Ramsdale looked confident, Billing as well looks like he has a sweet left foot and good vision and Lerma returned like he had never played Copa America. The negatives....I still worry about Rico despite desperately wanting him to succeed and the system I don't think suited the players we had available. We like 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 is an easier switch from it than a back three/five and it would get us over the 'we can't play two in central midfield without being over-ran' and haven't since Arter went off the boil.

I'm not going to bang on about training as it upsets a few people but today, with another key player injured in training and the players looking so heavy legged compared to Sheff Utd to me screams the question if we have the coaching knowledge with top class players. We should at least have been able to match them for energy. Eddie admitted after the game some players were dead on their feet...which begs the question...….why? And the other question - why not use a substitute? Would Harry Wilson have weakened that side with a late cameo (and he would have been on for the free-kick), would Daniels have done a worse job adding a bit of energy to the left back role..... would Ibe have maybe beaten a man in a one on one where the other's failed. It seems very odd that we watched ourselves get over-run and not change either the system or one player.

With Villa and Man City coming up we may well regret not hanging on for those three points but impressive as Sheffield United were...….we only have ourselves to blame, and mainly off the pitch.

As accurate as ever.
It’s a worry that the squad seems to be so consistent at being inconsistent!

Not all this is correct. Sheffield Utd were hyped with playing a very expansive brand of football. At times they did get their centre backs overlapping and wing backs in the box, but they were much more conservative than anyone could realistically expected.

Setting up with the 3 forwards was the correct thing to do to exploit the gaps they were expected to leave. The big mistake is the failure to recognise Sheffield Utd were playing more conservatively than anticipated and not making the adjustments.
