Never Tear Us Apart - message from the club?

Watched the start of the Hearts v Rangers game earlier and the pre match ‘entertainment’ was a good laugh. An old crooner leading the whole stadium in singing what must be their club song - a bit cringey but very effective in getting the whole crowd whipped up. Must be on YouTube somewhere.

Also an “ultras” section behind the goal similar to Palace.

I think this is what we need. The trouble of course is, the age demographic of such a group would be what 16-24? Very few of that age group would have a season ticket at Dean Court, let alone the ability to assemble somewhere together.

They’d be accompanied by a security person and safeguarding officer at all times

Part of the issue is ticket availability for newer (younger) fans, and part of the issue is being able to pick tickets where you want, both needed to create an ultra type atmosphere.

I'm hoping these issues will be resolved when the capacity is increased, considering our away atmosphere seems pretty good.

It was quite jarring to see how flat the home atmosphere was on Sunday, considering the scoreline, the performance and where the club is in a historical context.

Well I am assuming that most of those away fans also go to home games.

Most will probably disagree with me, but I think the poor atmosphere at DC lies with the club and its culture of total risk aversion.

They do, in regards to Palace, they have a set area in Selhurst Park. They were directly behind the goal a few years ago but were forced to shuffle along recently for some reason (probably ticket prices).

Every week we have complaints about the DC atmosphere. It's the same as it always was. It's been fine other than moments when the side have been under the cosh and fans are nervous.

It's better away as it is for every club in the country.
So don’t bother to try and make it any better then is that what you’re saying?

Not that long ago when we sang Caroline (known across the generations) and then Red Army with Mike Botto not cramming in Make some Noise for the Boys as now the atmosphere was much better as we kicked off than now. We have been hijacked by the media team and it doesn't work.

Needs a block in the south stand where the flags aren’t taken away, whip up 20 or so (it doesn’t take a lot) 16-24 year olds to sing regardless. Others will join in. At least that, from the outside looking in, is organic and natural. Just needs a bit of organising.

With Palace treating it like a typical end of season affair the game did feel dead and buried for a long time.

But it was still our first home win since January, most hadn’t seen us win in months.

Agree, as I’ve said before, I think it’s a timing thing.

After the Premier League anthem and line up, you need Botto to make some noise for the boys at that point. North Stand do their one verse, ending in Bournemouth…

Then have the video, flag waving, scarves aloft part just before kick off. Have a little ditty playing then that’s got something to sing a long to “fools rush in”, “hey Jude” whatever.

Less emphasis on it must be this or needs be unique because we want an anthem, it doesn’t matter that it’s only 20/30 seconds or something… it’s right on to kick off and has the chance to build up an atmosphere.

The current anthem doesn’t do that, it prevents other chants from getting going, doesn’t give an opportunity to really sing along to and then at kick off its killed stone dead.

As I see it, there's generally 100 minutes of football after kickoff. Is the whole atmosphere killed by the "wrong song" played to loudly for 70 year olds? : )

If that's true then we as away fans wouldn't make any noise at clubs like Liverpool, Notts Forest, Arsenal etc because they "pump up the volume" for their walkout anthems but we do start singing/chanting once they're over : )

The atmosphere could be better but to me it's not much different to most other years : )

Ps it's nothing personal against Sweet Caroline or the people that enjoy her song but I felt it killed any atmosphere. It took ages to get to the "so good, so good, so good" bit then tailed off after that : )

I'll admit I wasn't familiar with the INXS tune but it sticks with me days after the match. It might catch fire with enough to become "our song", at least it's anthemic not a novelty song : )

The whole build up seems so ‘false’, football fans are the people that make the atmosphere, starts by meeting up with friends and people they got to know in seats near theirs and have a chat if they can hear each other above the ‘din’.

We were discussing this before the game on Sunday, how fans built the atmosphere with bells, rattles, horns etc.

Yes it was a long time ago and with terraces, but at least we didn’t need blaring music and someone calling out to all four stands make some noise for the boys, we did it ourselves.

We need something. It’s no good saying what us old farts did. Things have moved on.

No one has beaten Derek idea yet ;-)

First para.

The next two paras, seems the old football rattle had its uses. :grinning:

I don’t think Newcastle supporters need brass bands, drums, megaphones or clackers. A good few beers in the belly pre match will do.

The wooden rattle that I made, I took down to a Dulwich Hamlet game a while back, and it’s only use was to create the most annoying noise possible (A 1950s version of the vuvuzela I reckon. The middle class Peckham hipsters, who didn’t have a clue what it was or what had hit them, moved away from us, suitably appalled. Thus allowing me, my good mate, and our kids to get a perfect, pitch side view of the game.

At last I had found a good use and reason for the wooden rattle.

The club should adopt the attitude of 'less is more'... I'm not advocating them do nothing, as I welcome the fact they are 'trying', but what they do try does often come off as being a little OTT... In true American style, and that's not their fault... In the grand scheme if things, they're still relative newcomers to this UK football malarkey... The responsibility needs to also fall at the door of the so-called fans' representatives that the club bounce these ideas off of... They are the ones that are either coming up with, or agreeing to these 'attempts' t generate an atmosphere...'

Atmosphere is created by fans, not music... Of course, music can help (if it's the right music), but not when it drowns out everything else and stops the organic process... If the club do feel the need to push fans into something, make it punchy, make it short, and just get it going, then leave it for us to continue...

I've said before, that our main issue is we have a very small portion of home fans that are actively engaged in creating said atmosphere... This was highlighted at the end of the game v Palace... I saw a video of Adli's son score the goal and you could see all across the NS, the seats that were clearly immediately vacated, and the ones that had fans still stood there to applaud and cheer the players off... I would suggest that it was just the final third (top) that was sporadically still stood there... The remaining front two-thirds... empty...

I know it isn't as black and white as that, but it does point out that over two-thirds of our so-called more vociferous end, cant even be arsed to stay for 1 minute to applaud the players off... We simply have an apathetic fan base for the most... We desperately need the new SS and those extra 9 rows at the back of the NS and get some younger/new fans in the ground...

Get what you’re saying but I disagree with your last point. I try not to leave early (but sometimes do), but I’m usually off at the final whistle. I’ve seeen the game and thats’s why I go (usually - games like Bolton, Charlton etc are of course very different.

If people want to stay then fair play.

Yep, understand that and as I read it back, I kinda knew there would be a response like this, and 100% understand that some folks will need/want to go quickly after the game... Each to their own...

I guess the point I was trying to make was to back up my earlier post that we have minimal vocal support for the most, in amongst our 9500 home fans., so having a consistently 'good' atmosphere is always going to be tough.. and 'for me' this was echoed by the very few that stay for a few mins after the game to clap the lads off...

But I absolutely get what you're saying... Wasn't a dig at anyone... It is what it is...

Why is it whenever you watch a PL game on TV, nearly everybody is standing? Yet at DC, if you even shuffle on your seat to get your car keys out of your back pocket , you get the stare from "
rent a steward "
