Non - mental health and suicide

Thanks for all of the messages guys. Funeral was last Friday which was incredibly tough but was also good to raise a good few glasses in his memory.

Interesting to see Jack Wilshere talking about mental health issues on sky today, his line about people thinking that footballers should be fine because they've got it all is interesting, depression doesn't care what your bank account says.

You have to feel for Wilshere. All that talent and just limited by injuries and maybe mental health has been a factor too. I did wonder actually. Saw that Arteta said he would be welcome to train with Arsenal. That must have felt good to be told that. Hope he finds a club where he plays more like the old Jack again. I still think the US would be good for him. They would love him and it seems like he needs to feel loved at the moment.

This point is spot on. While I think the importance of mental health is being recognised more broadly in society, I still think the overwhelming majority of people see it as primarily something which people who are struggling with something (work, money, family etc.) suffer with and substitute depression for someone feeling down. Until depression and anxiety are viewed by society as illnesses like any other, we will continue to have the same problems with the whole 'pull yourself together' advice. The opposite of poor mental health should not be seen as toughness, resilience or other character traits - it is fundamentally to do with hormone imbalances, as others here have mentioned.

Mental health is getting a fair bit of air time, but am not sure the key messages are really getting across.
