Away from the frustrating Cherries news, and white noise of last minute electioneering - this event is absolutely horrific. At first it sounds like something out of a Hollywood disaster movie, Pierce Brosnan running down a volcano in Dante's Peak or something. All very dramatic and interesting. But then descriptions of injuries comes out. Harrowing stuff.

Nearly took a trip out there when I was in NZ a few years back. From the mainland coast about 10 miles away you could see the clouds of smoke/ash being emitted daily.
Wait till the big one blows at Yellowstone.

Nothing in comparison, but when visiting such sites on holiday you forget its deadly potential. Nisyros in Greece(just off Kos) for example hasnt erupted for many many years, but is advertised as an active volcano, gas escapes and the smell of sulphur is all around. Its a tourist day trip destination and very interesting too, but White Island is reportedly very volatile, and after the horse has bolted, but expect people to look into how tourist day trips are permitted
