Players we want out in the summer-

This is going to be the problem I fear. Not just with Cook, but actually finding a club who will pay close to market value for our ‘superstars.’ Lerma cost us 25m, Danjuma just under 15 and Rico 10, is there a mug out there who is going to pay close to what we paid for these guys? I’d imagine not. And if that’s the case are our board going to be prepared to take massive hits on them? The same board that turned down offers for Joshua King in the Summer and wouldn’t budge from an absurd 15m asking price. Even though he’d even said publicly that he didn’t want to be here. These players have talent for sure but they are absolutely not what is needed at this level, I really don’t think that you can afford to carry even one player at this level no matter how talented they are. But I fear that we are stuck with them.

Of the players who probably think they are at least PL quality I think Lerma has shown enough this season to get a move abroad, Spain maybe? Same for Rico and Danjuma (9 goals so far), especially as they've probably earned around 5 million in their time here so might be prepared to take a drop in wages.

I can't see anyone taking Brooks or L Cook until next January at the earliest after they've proved their fitness.

I will be surprised if anyone comes in for Billing, unless it's on a free and even then why would you? But if he's got a good agent he might go abroad, maybe Holland where his kind of attitude seems fairly common.

Stacey is the only one I think a PL club would be interested and maybe S Cook.

As for the rest, I think they've found their level. Kelly and Mepham might improve in a year or two. Smith, Stanislas will only get worse.

I believe more of the blame has to be on the players shoulders rather than Woodgate. They played well first half and just did not compete second half. Barnsley players wanted it more and we weren’t up for the battle. You have to compete to earn the right to play. Many of these players have done the same under EH and JT. To many Fancy Dans and not enough winners.
Sure Woodgate has made mistakes. He is still learning what the players have to offer and how they react in different situations. However we don’t know if Pearson is fit enough to play 90 without risking injury. I would have liked to see Wiltshire come on but one player won’t make a huge differences. Yesterday’s second half was reminiscent of Palace at home last season.

What's this 'we want out' guff?

Let me ask a question based on a little history.

What players do you want shot of, based on the first 10 matches of the 2012-13 season, when we were promoted?

If you decide - after reading that BBC report of the sacking of Paul Groves, then reflecting on where we finished at the end of that season - that perhaps those players you wanted sacked, shot, decapitated etc. on the 2nd October 2012

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/19709719

after the 3-1 defeat to Crawley, were still there away to Tranmere, perhaps you might reflect on how it was possible for those same players to give us such a nice day out?

Now you've got me wondering what JW said to them at half time that made them that much worse.

I’d have said I wanted out Demouge, Davids, Addison, McDermott, David James, Lee Bernard, Wes Thomas and Zubar. Eddie came in and obliged by offloading the lot of them, either permanently or through admission from the team. He signed Pitman and Ritchie to get us promoted. Your argument doesn’t really make sense. We got promoted that season because we alienated the bigger name ‘bad apples’ from the first team.

The only problem with that is that 3 managers over the last 2 years have been unable to get the current crop of players to gel as a team for longer than 45 minutes at a time.

Ah, hindsight eh?
Clearly, with that list of players you wanted sacked, Eddie was on the dog to you for advice at the time.

Our current performances indicate that we cannot defend or score from corners and free kicks. It’s also evident from recent games that we can only perform for 45 minutes and are incapable of breaking down packed defences. Our passing is generally laboured and inaccurate coupled with an inability to score goals. Team selection is a complete mystery with our most creative midfielder Jack left on the bench and we have a past it ex-saint veteran up front with Solanke. All in all the passion and team spirit that we once had in abundance has sadly gone and I’m not sure what the future holds for us. What a terrible shambles we are in.

The squad comes a couple of steps down the priority list to be resolved.

First there's the board, they need to think about the clubs direction. That stems from Max, and lands on Blake, Hughes etc.

Second there's the manager. It feels like Woodgate is basically a glorified caretaker, just like Tindall turns out to have been (re Hughes trying to get Parker who now seems out of reach).

Only once those large pieces of the puzzle are in place, can the squad be more productively sorted through. Get the overall strategy figured out before you get down to tactics.

Spot on. Max is the boss and he has got to be clear in setting the direction he wants for this club. This season has turned into a total shambles with the managerial merry-go-round and poor performances on the pitch. Max is clearly no fool, but why does he seemingly allow a bunch of half-wits run his football club?

The next manager is potentially the biggest decision of all. Get that correct, with someone who can galvanise and bring together this talented but arrogant and mentally feeble bunch of players, and next season could still be exciting. Get it wrong and we will be back in the third tier for another long stretch.

Current crop?

Do I really need to list all the players who have departed in the last 8 months or so?

Although I tend to agree, that Howe probably wasn't going to get much out of Fraser, King and to some extent Wilson(C) in the second half of last season.

Had Arter not crocked Brooks, I think we would have stayed up. We were, after all, in 5th place in the virtual table, when 1-0 up at Newcastle.

I really don’t get the notion that ‘a talented squad’ should result in success. Jordan Ibe is talented but doesn’t have a football brain or a winner’s mentality. Tommy did not have Jordan’s talent but he brought an awful lot to the team. Any manager would struggle to get consistent winning performance from our current squad who are not great competitors. Recruitment has been our problem, hopefully Pearson and CCV are a sign that this is changing.

Blimey , read those out and it makes you blanche!

Maybe it's a touch of the rose tinteds here, but back then I don't remember the animosity and vitriol directed at the players in the way it is at present.

They were either AFCB through and through or journeymen players who came and went. Very few really pissed me off.
The anger and frustration was aimed at the manager in the main.

This lot we currently have are a different bunch altogether.

I care about few of them and hardly any bleed red and black.

I know Arter gets blamed for everything but wasn’t the training incident with Lloyd Kelly?

If..as its been mentioned...some of our imports have earned about £5 million in their time at DC..they could jack it in tomorrow..jump in their ' Lambos'..drive to Kent...tunnel it to Europe....buy a stake in a vineyard....
.....'bleeding red and black' needn't figure in any autobiography...any more than the peasants picking the grapes...

Three contributing factors then and now may be that:

1. Although footballers were well relatively well paid, they didn't get paid (note not deliberate avoiding the use of the word, earn) more in one week than the average supporter does in a whole year.

2. Loyalty these days is much more to the next contract, rather than the one they have now.
