What's the point of winding up the referee? They'll make your life hell and their only potential punishment comes after the game and infers no advantage.

As an old git, I’ll likely be accused of looking through Rose tinted glasses but when I was playing any laying of hands on a ref was an immediate sending off, long ban, even for a pat on the shoulder and often a life ban.
The acceptance over the years of all the foul and abusive language towards refs, especially in the pro game, has permeated its way through.
Refs have tried to become “mates” with the players to manage them and as a result have lost authority. We had to learn how to manage a ref without the abuse.
It’s no surprise this ref has reacted despite there being consequences.

The ref involved in the Ipswich v Northampton situation has been punished and it seems what he has claimed was said at the time hasn't gone down well at Ipswich.
