The Countdown to Game 38

Only 5 games to go, and what a scoreboard watcher's dream. 7 teams within 3 points. Teams in that 7 pack in bold.

This week ..

Brighton-Chelsea. A six-pointer. Draw would be great for us.
Bournemouth-Leeds. Both teams on a heater. What a win that would be for the Cherries.
Sunderland-Forest. A Forest win gets them to 39 points.
Fulham-Villa. Villa very close to nailing down a Champions League spot.
West Ham-Everton. Hammers with an opportunity to get to 4 points above Spurs.
ManU - Brentford. A ManU win nails down their Champions League spot as well.

Cannot expect a weekend of results like we just saw, but a Cherries win and some chips fall our way .... holy moley.

There's also Palace v West Ham tomorrow. Could do with a Wham win in that one given Palace's games in hand.

It's remarkable ..... of the 20 teams in the League, is Newcastle the only one with nothing to play for???

I overlooked that one.

Palace also still have to come to DC. Unfortunately for them, that's the weekend after they play the away leg of their Conference Semi-final in Krakow. My guess is that they will see that competition as their best chance to secure a European spot again for next season.

I tried understanding the scenarios required for as many as 9 teams to qualify for europe
it involved some convoluted permutation of villa, palace and arsenal winning euro trophies, tube drivers not being on strike and donald trump swimming naked across the straights of hormuz
The only scenario I understand is for 8 clubs. If Man City win the FA Cup then the clubs in 6th and 7th place qualify for the Euro League and 8th for the conference.
Tube drivers and Donald Trump have no bearing on the issue - unless it's buried in the small print.

There is some theoretical way to have 9 teams in Europe but I think it involves the winners of the Europa and Champions League finishing outside of the European places within the PL.
Or something highly unlikely like that.

Oh, I don't know.
I think it's quite likely that Braga and PSG will finish outside of the European places in the PL.

Anyone with more knowledge than me able to say what the chances of getting screwed over by another of Bill Foleys clubs?
ie - qualifying for the same European competition as us but finishing in a higher league position - as happened to Palace last season.

Is unlikely now we have no ownership of Hibs. Lorient and Moreirense are not anywhere near European places
