The Countdown to Game 38

So, tomorrow's games...

Burnley v Villa
Burnley to do us a massive favour with a home win, please. It would make the Friday night Villa v Liverpool game massive.

Palace v Everton
Whatever the result, it means one of these two will no longer be able to catch us. I think a Palace win is preferable as they have their minds elsewhere.

Forest v Newcastle
Maybe a draw. Pushes Forest toward safety before we play them but stops their run of league wins.

West Ham v Arsenal
Home win please. We need to beat Man City but also need Man city still interested on the last day of the season when they play Villa, which means Arsenal need to lose a match.

We need a big favour from Burnley, as unlikely as it may be. Hopefully Villa are focusing on the final but Burnley again have nothing to play for.

I can see a scenario where we finish 6th, Villa win their final but also they finish above Liverpool in 4th and so we have to settle for Europa League. The Brummy bastards

I can see a scenario where we qualify for Europe but UEFA suspends all international competitions in response to the aviation fuel crisis …
I saw in the week about Liverpool winning a European cup match after a draw over 2 legs and a 3rd match at a neutral venue. Let's go go that and have a 50% chance against PSG if matches can't happen

Beat a jaded Man City next week and we go to Forest with a chance of overhauling Villa or Liverpool to finish 5th and qualify for Champions League via top 5 position. With Villa v Liverpool next week, then Man C v Villa and Liverpool v Brentford on final day.
Champions League is happening folks, I can feel it.

At this stage of the season I'm used to working out permutations for one desired result. Promotion or avoiding relegation.

This season is frying my brain.
We could get

Champions league
Europa league
European conference
Nothing

When Bill said Europe in 5 years I thought he was being optimistic. I now know he is a realist.

And then there were 5 (mathematically), and (realistically) 3 teams in the hunt with 2 games to go, and Cherries still sole possession of 6th place.

5 teams within 6 points for sixth place.

A single point for the Cherries, or a dropped point by Everton and Chelsea, gets the pack down to 3.

Teams still in the hunt in bold for week 37.
AFCB(55) - Man City .... Cherries are playing well enough to get a result.
Leeds - Brighton(53) ... Leeds a tough opponent.
Brentford(51) - Palace ... Palace nothing to play for.
Chelsea(49) - Spurs ........ Chelsea win or done, and even that might not be enough.
Everton(49) - Sunderland ...... ditto.

Week 38 matches:
Brighton (h) - Man United
AFCB (a) - Forest
Brentford (a) - Liverpool
Chelsea (a) - Sunderland
Everton (a) - Spurs

I have to admit that with the focus on the potential final standings, it merits a short pause to reflect on just how f-ing marvelous this run has been. Last loss was January 3!.

And fourth still achievable!!

No way BOTH Brighton and Brentford win BOTH their games. Thus one point from our last 2 games gives us at least 7th, 3 points gives us 6th.

Just need City to win the Cup

I hate to say this, but next weekend, we could really do with a big favour from Leeds. Let's hope they're in the mood to celebrate securing mathematical safety. It would be a huge boost to keep BHA behind us.
