The Countdown to Game 38

Keep playing like they did today and we can tip them out of 5th place. Villa v Liverpool next weekend - both of them will be desperate to secure that 4th place. Really not sure how that game will pan out.
It's the absolute joy of scoreboard watching. 1. You have a vested interest in the outcome 2. The outcome is uncertain.
Add to it that - for me - unlike most NA sports, draws can be very telling.

If Villa and Liverpool draw against each other on Friday and then we beat Man City, we'll go into the final day knowing if Liverpool lose v Brentford or Villa fail to beat Man City and we beat Forest, then we'd overtake them. Us finishing in 4th place could be on the cards!

On the other side of things, we could really do with Brighton losing against Leeds next weekend as that would give us breathing space to attack the game against Man City knowing if we falter it doesn't have to cost us.

Anyone else going to be disappointed if we only get Europa League ?

I used to get disappointed when we didnt get into the 3rd round of the FA cup.
No, still bite your hand off for any European football.
Realistically we don't get anything from City, and then Forrest could be anything! Lets just get over the line.

We have a big six days of matches starting tomorrow, almost all of which can impact the race in one way or another:

Friday
Villa v Liverpool
Best result for us would be a Liverpool win as it keeps Villa within distance and also keeps them in fifth place. A draw opens up the unlikely scenario where we could even finish fourth but the safer option is a Scouse victory.

Saturday
Chelsea v Man City - FA Cup final
No question here, a Man City win adds another place to the Euro spots via league placement. Come on Antoine!

Sunday
Man Utd v Notts Forest
If Liverpool win on Friday, a Forest win would keep Man Utd honest on the final day of the season v Brighton since Liverpool could still overtake them. However, a Forest win also means they'd be 9 Premier League games unbeaten when we face them. I think we need a Man Utd win.

Brentford v Palace
Easy choice. Palace win please. That would mean Brentford can no longer catch us, no matter what happens in our games.

Everton v Sunderland
Anything but an Everton win is good. It would mean Everton can no longer catch us.

Leeds v Brighton
This is a big one. A Leeds win would give us some breathing space and allow a slip up in one of our two final games.

Wolves v Fulham
One that actually makes no real difference either way.

Newcastle v West Ham
Also makes no difference to our situation. Although a West Ham win could put pressure on Spurs in their final match of the season v Everton.

Monday
Arsenal v Burnley
We should be all-in on Burnley here. We want to beat Man City but we also want them fighting on the final day when they face Villa. If Arsenal win and we beat City, then the title race is over.

Tuesday
AFCB v Man City
Nothing needs to be said about this one. You know.

Chelsea v Spurs
If we've lost to City then anything but a Chelsea win would mean they can no longer catch us. If we get at least a point from City then it doesn't matter, although a Chelsea win would be funny for other reasons.

Wednesday
Freiburg v Villa
Depending on how our, Brighton's, Brentford's, and Villa's results have gone will impact what we want here.

If Brighton have overtaken us it might be that we want Villa to lose to deny Brighton a chance at a Champions League place.

If we beat Man City and Brighton drop points v Leeds, then we want Villa to win as it opens up the potential for us to get CL.

There's a good chance that this will be one where we won't know what result we should have wanted until after the final game of the season.

Strap yourselves in for a near week of supporting teams you wouldn't normally care about...

It’ll be a draw or Liverpool narrow win. Villa have lost quite a bit of momentum atm.

Saturday
Chelsea v Man City - FA Cup final

Man city to batter Chelsea before Chelsea takes the lead on a counter attack, or a jammy deflection. Can see this going to extra time and possibly penalties. Both teams have been shaky this season. A knackered city could be helpful on Tuesday depending on which Chelsea turns up.

Not entirely sure on this one. Forest would love nothing more than to stop Bournemouth’s unlikely charge for a champions league push.

Brentford v Palace
Easy choice. Palace win please. That would mean Brentford can no longer catch us, no matter what happens in our games.
As seen last night against city, palace will be focusing on their cup final as they should. Brentford have dried up a little bit in the last few games in terms of goals. Can see a draw happening.

Everton v Sunderland
Anything but an Everton win is good. It would mean Everton can no longer catch us.

Sunderland’s form has been patchy recently to the point there’s talk of their manager being given the sack for not getting Europe which seems nuts (although Bournemouth can’t talk after what happened with gon!). Everton to nick a 1-0.
Leeds v Brighton
This is a big one. A Leeds win would give us some breathing space and allow a slip up in one of our two final games.
Tough one to call. Leeds with nothing to play for and Brighton, like Bournemouth pushing for an unlikely champions league spot. Entertaining 2-2 draw.
Wolves v Fulham
One that actually makes no real difference either way.
0-0 and the very definition of last game on motd (outside chance of a Harry Wilson screamer to nick it).
Newcastle v West Ham
Also makes no difference to our situation. Although a West Ham win could put pressure on Spurs in their final match of the season v Everton.

Come on wet spam. Make the spuds sweat until the last day. Sadly think it’s spam for the drop.

Monday

Arsenal to revert back to the horrible grind out a result that pretty much ensures the title is theirs. Burnley showed they have a little bit of fight against Villa, but can’t see them doing it two games in a row. Would be very funny though.
Tuesday

Love a win, would take a draw. Think the inevitable will happen though. Not a bad team to lose the unbeaten streak to though!

Whatever result Bournemouth want will be mixed. Some for, some against.

Sunderland will be all out to finish the league ahead of Newcastle

Thanks @kirsikka. I was trying to puzzle it all out, and appreciate the succinct analysis all in one place. Now let's get to the watching and cheering.

Not the best start last night. However, there is still a chink of light coming from the door with the Champions League sign on it. There are two realistic ways we can get through it:

1. Win both our matches and, as long as Liverpool don't beat Brentford, we'll finish fifth and qualify. In this case, we need three results to go a certain way.

2. If Villa win the Europa final, we get enough points to finish sixth and then Liverpool beat Brentford and Man City beat Villa we'll also qualify. In this case, we need five results to go a certain way.

I’d forget champions league now and concentrate on either Europa or conference. Either of which Bournemouth fans would have bitten your hand off for at the start of the season. Fully expect a crap fa cup final where Chelsea snatch an 89th minute winner from a deflected shot.

Why do we need to forget Champions League and concentrate on Europa or Conference? I think I might continue to entertain all possibilities personally.
