Worth pointing out, with all the discussion around Scott and his contract situation, Adams also only had two years remaining on his deal.

This is the summer when we either need them both to sign extended deals or find a buyer for whoever won't.

Some big discussions and decisions for Pinto to have and make.

Easier said than done. It seems to be we live in an era in which players are choosing to run their contracts down, they may well decide that they are better off waiting for two years and securing themselves a financially lucrative deal on a free.

We’ve had this with Kelly and Senesi recently, the club would have been aware with two years to go that both were likely to leave at the end of their deals but neither were sold. We could have easily made a bit of money back on them both if we had wanted but we didn’t.

Despite all of this talk about ‘our model’ being totally profit orientated, historically we have been more than comfortable to let our players run their deals down. I don’t believe that this is ‘our model.’ Most of the sales we have made have either been forced through by players who wanted out, release clauses or in the case of Kerkez for PSR reasons. I think that our ‘model’ is simply to be as successful as possible while staying within the SCR parameters.

Adams is different to scott, he'll be 29 when his current contract finishes
Yes so he is in the Senesi territory of one big contract to negotiate.

If we get an offer this summer for him I’d take it and try for some one taller and better with the ball going forwards.

Think we probably have to accept players not extending their contracts when they know that a few good seasons at AFCB benefits both parties?

I mean Senesi saved us a transfer fee after Zabs and Deano left by stepping up, and obviously helped James Hill to progress...that sort of thing is priceless maybe?

There was no market for Lerma, Kelly or Senesi that would have made any financial sense when they had two years to go on their contract. Nobody from the Sky Six was considering Senesi two years ago, it's taken our success and his impact as part of that to highlight what he can bring, alongside Spurs being in an absolute mess, for him to look like a good option for their current situation.

If we were offering him around at around double his purchase fee, say £30 million, two years ago we'd have drawn an absolute blank.

In the same way that us doing so well has put Senesi in the shop window and enabled him to negotiate a much better move than might have seemed likely in the summer of 2024, the same can be said for Adams. Injury issues aside, he's looked top class at what he does.

Is there a club out there willing to pay double what we spent on him, so around £40m? Maybe, maybe not. That's up to Pinto. But if the club allows him and Scott to both run their contracts down and leave for free in the summer of 2028 then they must have some extraordinary plans and moves lined up.

It could be we decide to take the hit on one if we can get a good fee for the other. However, if we go into the start of next season with both on the same contract and both still with us then I'm very surprised.

I'd suggest we line up the replacement ahead of any bid we accept. Succession planning is what any good Sporting Director would do :p

It just goes to show how well we have done for a number of years.

Players are like cars and are depreciating assets, the fact we look at expecting a return of least what we paid plus a few seasons of service from them just highlights how well we are run.

Im not sure thats a good anology.

Many clubs sell players for more than they signed them for. Very few cars are sold for more further down the line.

All well and good, but what if they don’t want go right now? Their agents will know full well that if they see out the next two years then there is a very lucrative deal waiting for them. I can see Scott going because I think that one of the greedy six might come in now but Adams I think will let in run down because it will present the opportunity to sign for clubs who otherwise wouldn’t have been interested with a transfer fee involved.

I kind of refute your first paragraph too, with Kelly Spurs bid at the end of the Summer window in the last year of his contract. He wanted to go and was affected by it to the point that he missed the next game against Brentford. We could have made money on him but we chose sporting success instead in that instance.

I think given we are probably going to sell Ryan and Kroupi combined for not far off £200m in a years time will reduce the urgency to make smaller profits on players with expiring contracts.

Two years is a long time in football, especially for someone who has suffered injuries like Adams. That's the difference between 12 months and two years, the balance of risk shifts. If we were to present him with a move to a good club at one of the best league with a deal where he'd get a good signing on fee, a better wage, a longer contract and a decent chance of consistently being involved at the top end of the table I don't think he'd turn it down.

Of course, he may choose to still sit out his deal, but I think chances are he takes it. That's why the ball is in Pinto's court. If he can get something on the table and offer Adams that or an extended contract with us, it can change the equation.

The Kelly offer wasn't a good offer, and that's the point I was making when I said "that makes financial sense". It was a £20m offer on transfer deadline day, when we would have struggled to find a replacement in time and, even if we did find one, would likely have been at an inflated price. Not quite as egregious as the Josh King bid from Man Utd, but not far off it.

Many clubs may sell a player for more money but very few players do move for more money.

I'd wager no more than 35-40% of transfers involve a player moving for a higher transfer fee, let alone a significantly higher one.
