Wycombe Wanderers must win both remaining games, and hope Derby County lose theirs - in addition to overcoming a 13-goal deficit in goal difference - to stay in the Championship. It is a very tall order, given that they’ve won consecutive league matches only twice previously this season, and scored in both halves in just three (6.81%) of their Championship games this term.
Furthermore, the ‘Chairboys’ haven’t won a home league game by more than one goal all season, and given the must-win nature of this fixture, their current nine-game drawless run could well continue (W4, L5). Interestingly, the last eight league matches here that witnessed both teams scoring also featured goals in both halves (W2, D1, L5).
Promotion-chasing Bournemouth suffered a blow to their hopes of hosting the second leg of their play-off semi-final by losing 1-0 to Brentford, snapping a run of seven consecutive league victories. They’ll deem a good start as essential, as they possess a 75% win rate (W18, D5, L1) after scoring first in league games this term.
Though far stronger on paper, especially after winning the last three competitive H2Hs ‘to nil’, Bournemouth have failed to beat any of the three sides immediately above Wycombe on the road this term (D1, L2). That potentially puts their win rate as away league favourites this term (42.11%) at risk of being lowered further beneath the league average (48.07%).
Players to watch: This could be cult hero Adebayo Akinfenwa’s last home appearance for Wycombe - the hulking striker’s last five league goals for the club have come in games featuring over 2.5 goals. More of an early threat, Philip Billing has netted inside the first 30 minutes of three of Bournemouth’s last four league away fixtures.
Hot stat: Wycombe have a 72.73% Championship loss rate against sides starting this round in the top six (D3, L8).
