Match Report and Mom v Fulham

He made abrilliant reaction save at close range from a near post corner in the first half. I was sure it was in. Dont recall much really after that apart from routine stuff.

Just seen MOTD.....the build up play was as good as last week..it was just the finishing awful....and the goalkeeping of Rico preventing it being 4-1.... I thought Fraser was superb! ...but Brooks out of effective position again!

We can Go for and Do for the Dung next week....their defence was all over the Tyne today ! Hopefully on Tuesday Watford can beat them, demoralise them and keep them 5 points behind us.......and rough them up a bit!

Season is over for me as with most of the players I saw out there today...Eddie has some serious sorting out to do for the next PL campaign...otherwise we will be in deep do do...
Great post Garbo....players cant be bothered so I will give Spurs a miss...a very harsh summer for many payers with tough decisions needed on who remains and who is simply not good enough....but an even tougher summer for the management. Hopefully we will also see some of those tough decisions on the numbers of and qualities of the coaching staff.

Thanks for another insightful report Neil. Eddie has the admiral knack of man management and obviously has the respect of his players. But as a tactician he falls woefully short. The game could have been one with one up front. Control the midfield, better possession, better chances. Throwing on more and more strikers again and again is, putting it politely, puzzling

I think you need the players to perform first and for most to make any formation work.
We know as a team that we are capable of some brilliant performances but in this league even 5% off your game as a team can have dramatic consequences.
Eddie has always been so good in getting the team to play together as one and get the performance out of a group of players who are worth way more than thier individual parts.
If you look at the starting 11 today how many would play in another premier league team based on thier individual talent ? Maybe 5 ?
When they aren’t all ‘in it together’ then cracks appear.
I’m not saying they don’t care and don’t try but to be successful they need to believe and focus which I think may have gone a little wayward for one reason and another

Excellent post. Completely agree, although I may be a little bit more critical based on the Brighton game should have given them the confidence to push on against Fulham.

Instead too many of them are cruising and clearly feel too comfortable.

Against the majority of bottom half teams:-

Aké
Lerma
Brooks
King
Fraser
Wilson

As you move down towards the drop zone you might include Steve Cook and possibly Mepham. A fully fit Lewis Cook and Adam Smith would surely get in too.

I certainly don’t think a lack of talent is holding us back.

Fickle.

Sorry but that's the second time you've said the season is over for you. Fair play give someone else your ticket. A week ago we were ecstatic, there's still plenty of time to finish the season on a high.

Agree with Neil to a point, but Rico kept them in it. His superb save from Frasers run and shot in first half doesn't even get a mention!

The impact of having no right back (or even Junior when he went off) can’t be underestimated from yesterday. No overlapping to help create space for Brooks (and then Wee Man) completely blunted us. The tail end of the game was painful and we never really hit our rhythm throughout, yet could still have been 2 or 3 up by halftime.

Jeff was MoM for me yesterday, tried to make things happened and never hid.

Looking forward, I don’t want to see the squad torn apart - firstly I don’t think we can afford it and secondly, too much change can be very hard to manage. Just look at Fulham’s season. Big assumption that we don’t lose anyone, but if we don’t, central midfield and the full back positions needs strengthening and maybe a winger who can help take the pressure off Wee Man and Brooks. The biggest issue for me as has been highlighted by numerous posters is the reluctance to move away from 442 when needed. We just didn’t have the players on the pitch to do it yesterday.

I agree to an extent about lack of players yesterday. Certainly defensively anyway.

However, despite how out of favour / inexperienced Hyndman and Ofobohr are, they are still professional footballers at a PL club. Given the nonsense of a formation we were playing at the end with Mousset, Solanke and Fraser in goodness knows what positions, would it have been any worse bringing one of them on?
