FA Cup third round draw tomorrow

You'd know much better than me, of course.

I remember being told at the time that the idea was to be first in alphabetical order, and the BBC and FA wouldn't play and you were still filed under "B". I dare say the reports that the A was because you wanted to come first in the alphabet, may have come from jaundiced observers who ascribed inaccurate motives. Or else I'm remembering wrong, of course.

Whether that was the reason or not (and whether you like it or not) we were named AFC Bournemouth OVER 40 years ago, that is our name. If it's ok for AFC Wimbledon then it should be ok for us.

Bournemouth FC is a DIFFERENT TEAM. Perhaps people should show respect to both them and us and accept that.

I'm sorry to go on but it really does annoy me.

:utc:

AFC Bournemouth was (is?) a trading name.
The registered name of the club, stayed as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic for years.

I've some documents in my filing cabinet, from the community club days after the first administration, referring to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Youth Football Club (1998) trading as AFC Bournemouth.

ISTR that Dowsett or Bond, also said that AFC didn't stand for Association Football Club, or Athletic Football Club, just a way of getting our name at the top of the list. I'm aware that Wikipaedia has been edited many times over the years, reflecting differing view points, so when I've saved up enough to buy the club, we're going back to being called Boscombe.

Hopefully we'll get a home draw versus Coventry or Forest.

Great find AFCBfan.

So we are all wrong and it should be AFC, Bournemouth. The punctuation police will be along in a minute.

Fair enough. Never paid much attention as to whether they interpret the A as Athletic or just A. The PL / media just tend to ignore it all together so there are obviously different interpretations, they all do what they like anyway.
Just a bit of fun
AFC Wimbledon seem to come ahead of Accrington on fixture lists

Just seen the Marine ground and who they have drawn.

What a draw for them.

Even I was excited for them when Spurs came out, this is what the FA Cup should be all about. Good draw for Chorley and Stockport too, just a shame that Canvey or Boreham Wood get Millwall at home, if they had a PL team instead, that would be have been spot on.

Annoys me, too. On a couple of occasions I have diligently updated Wikipedia only to have it reverted, because they don't allow prefixes. Unless you're AFC Wimbledon. Or indeed any other AFC team.[/QUOTE]

I have also edited the entry to AFC on a couple of occasions but subsequently someone changed our full name to Association Football Club Bournemouth and on another occasion someone changed it to Athletic Football Club Bournemouth. I could not find a way to edit the headline name.

However, don't know if you've looked at wiki recently but our full name entry has reverted AFC Bournemouth and the headline name has now dropped the stops after A, F and C.

On wiki the headline name for other clubs who are Football Club or Athletic Football Club has stops ( F.C. or A.F.C. ) as the name has been abbreviated. As our AFC is not an abbreviation for anything, it doesn't need stops.

One possible reason for the non take-up of the name on TV and press in the 70's is that pre computers, AFC Bournemouth was simply too long to fit into results charts, league tables etc. That and the fact that it would have been far more difficult to let all and sundry in football and the media know that our new 'full' name was AFC Bournemouth. and not just a reorganisation of Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Football Club.

As others have said, to be first alphabetically on the list of clubs (at the time) the full name had to be AFC and not Athletic.

Kings Park Rangers would suit me....the ground is not in Bournemouth !

At the very least we should go back to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic...or Boscombe St Johns.
