Preston - The Verdict

I didn't watch but I think that assumption is an over-reaction.

Hes not wrong. Almost all the games this season we have played the first half like we think we are too good. We havent tried, we havent fought and we try to play the flashy pass instead of the simple stuff. Why pass 2 players out of a game when you can dribble past them, stop turn and dribble past them again.

...Preston were more determined and won nearly all the 50/50 balls ...quite clearly had done their homework on how brittle our central defence is...all that said if we could only do the simple things better like passing and moving into space when we are attacking...we got what we deserved for our powder puff display!

The countless times we get the ball 10 yards inside the Preston half, and...stop...look up....nobody moving....take a touch...look up again....Still nobody moving....Pass it sideways...same again....and back to the keeper.

Its all very disjointed.

Back to basics for JT and co, working on the shape and combinations.

Nobody really stepped up today, whereas a number of players were off the pace: Begovic, Smith, Rico, L.Cook, Lerma, Riquelme, Brooks, Solanke all poor today. Probably fringe player Sam Surrage the only player you can really say played well today. Never going to end well when all of your elite players are off the boil. And even then we somehow only lost by a goal.

Every game at this level should be in our own hands, which is what makes it so frustrating.

Danjuma and Brooks, for all of their talents are terrible for this. Stop dead and try and showcase your skills rather than play the quick and simple pass that is usually a better option.

Our initial shape played into their hands, we definitely huffed and puffed but they were able to play triangles around us every time. Once Jase eventually changed the formation we looked much more comfortable, Lerma looked lost in the first system but had a great game in that second system.

Oh yes....in Waza's world when we don't play well it's because the players aren't trying......of course there can't be any other explanation!......not blaming the formation today then?
Can you honestly say that we matched Preston’s levels of commitment tonight? Put aside what you think about me as a person for a minute. Can you seriously say that we matched them in terms of application and desire?

Disappointing.

Riquelme didn't work out, Rico just seems a liability lately for some reason . Brooks is so much better centrally. Smith seems alienated, probably told to.

Tonight seemed disjointed and the oppo aren't scare of us . Friday might be a 'mare going on the last two performances.....we probably need to really dig it out to get a result.

We play a bit like England...fearful of passing forward......Fear is the worst trait that can creep in.
.. Perpetual motion going forward is the ticket...like we did in 14-15...smash it forward...bang.. diagonal passes...finding space...run run run.. just do it relentlessly!

Wasn't 4231 supposed to be the cure for all our troubles.
