Woodgate to Southgate…

We got to the semis in the World Cup 3 years ago. He’s not all bad.
What, you mean in a group with Panama. Needing a late goal to beat Tunisia. Edging out a very average Sweden side in the last 16, and then scraping past an equally average Columbia side on penalties? Literally every time we played a half decent side we lost, Belgium twice and Croatia. He got lucky with the draw, that’s all.

A semi final is a semi final. Wouldn’t argue if we got to the semi finals of the fa cup in anyway would we?

Yes, but you actually have to look at the reality of the situation when using it as an argument to support Southgate’s credentials. Does beating Panama, Tunisia and Sweden, and scraping a penalty shoot out against Columbia really make him good enough for the England job?

We won the opening game of the Euros for the first time in how long, if ever, we’ve got 4 points, 2 clean sheets, yes we were crap tonight but I’m not sure it deserves the negativity.

They all come out of the same FA coaching school, only way to break the cycle is with a foreign coach.

4 points after 2 games, 2 clean sheets, you’re arguing that a semi final position isn’t deserved because of the opposition or draw. When we go out by all means make an argument but it’s a little premature now isn’t it.

I’m sure some on here still would….
I’d be happy if we got the FA cup semi final. But if we did it by beating league one teams in every round I would also be able to recognise that it doesn’t necessarily mean our manager is a genius.

Semi finals are a decent achievement, but like you say, we had a fortunate route, like we re probably will never have again.

Usually meet one of stronger nations before that, but we avoided them somehow.

Croatia were decent, but really nothing special, and they looked better than us most of the game.

No one is saying Southgate is a genius, we were crap tonight. The draw is the draw you’ve still got to beat these teams and Tunisia, Sweden and Columbia in 2018 were no complete walkovers

How many shots on target? I’m not arguing that it wasn’t deserved, I’m arguing that with the draw that we got the semi finals was the minimum that we should have achieved.
