I'm pleased to report that today's hard-earned "bonus" of three points against Liverpool boosts AFCB to just about a half-point off a reasonable 40-point pace:

Ten points from the remaining home games and five away (very achievable with consistent effort such as today's) would put us on 39 at season's end. Even with as many as nine teams "competing" for the three relegation spots, that should be enough to stay up. As disappointed as I was last Saturday, I am that pleased today.

Here’s the xG which favours Liverpool, although not my much if the penalty hadn’t been given, prompted by VAR. The first 25 minutes were even, Liverpool dominating possession and carving out one chance from a corner where Lerma was alert to get back onto the line to head away a van Dijk header (rated 1 in 3). We had a break away with Ouattara through against Allison, a heavy touch as he went round him took the change away, although the algorithm rated it as 1 in 2. On 28 minutes we took the lead. A quick counter attack, Neto’s ball to Smith and Smith’s pass with the outside of his foot set Ouattara free who powered past Van Dijk to cross for Billing to stroke home (1 in 2). Liverpool only had one more chance before the break. A header from Van Dijk, which he put wide (1 in 3) very similarly to a miss when Nottm Forest beat Liverpool. We probably expected an onslaught in the second half, but Liverpool were strangely muted. They only had two big chances in the entire 45 minutes, both essentially in the same incident. Jota heading a chance (1in 4) into Smith’s outstretched arm having jumped. It is arguable whether he raised his arm on the way down, but when the referee went to the monitor we all knew what to expect. This leaves only one team without a penalty award in the Premier League. Salah blazed wide (4 in 5) and then Liverpool created nothing until injury time, both from Gakpo, and minor chances.

There’s been a lot of debate about the formation (and best formations) on different threads. The average positions show a back four, with almost a narrow bank of six (in two clumps of three). There looked to be lots of space behind Smith (15) although Liverpool didn’t exploit this, and where Man City had found the gap behind Zemura, the pace of Kelly (5) was key to preventing too much going down this wing, which is sterling work given he was up against Salah and Alexander-Arnold. Both wingers (Ouattara 11 and Anthony 32) were helping defensively which could explain their relative depth being level with Rothwell (14) and Lerma (8). In terms of substitutions we didn’t overly retreat – Mepham was stripped to come on, but didn’t, which was interesting – we tried to protect the lead but were still trying to counter attack. Christie (10) came on for Billing (29) who had been booked. On 80 minutes, Lerma (8) was replaced by Cook (4) had Fredericks (2) for an injured Smith (15) with both sitting deeper. With 2 minutes to go, Semenyo (24) came on for Solanke (9) and Vina (18) replaced Anthony (32) the latter being the most defensive substitution of the 5.

Senesi had most touches (52), followed by 4 players with 45 or more touches: Kelly; Lerma; Anthony and Billing. Anthony and Billing had most touches in Liverpool’s half (26 and 25 respectively) with both having 19 touched in the final third, with Ouattara having 15. We had 12 touches in the opposition’s penalty area, Ouattara and Solanke with 3 each.

Senesi attempted most passes with 38, followed by Lerma who made 32 in the 80 minutes he played. Individual completion rates were improved against Arsenal with only Neto, Ouattara and Smith below 60% Given all three were involved in the goal, we can let this go. Rothwell and Anthony had the highest completion rates of the starts (83%).

Our players tried to take on a man 37 times, being successful 18 times, which was a big improvement compared with the Arsenal game. Ouattara led the way with 5 successful take ons (from 7 attempts) with one of these leading to the goal.

We created a 3 chances including 2 big chances (Billing’s goal and Ouattara’s chance). Liverpool created 7 chances, with 3 big (the 3 headers from Van Dijk and Jota).

AFCB won 17 of 31 aerials duals. Ouattara won 6 from 10, a complete contrast to Arsenal where he only won 1 from 9. Solanke only won 1 from 6 although he was up against Van Dijk.

Lerma and Kelly had the most defensive actions with 14. Lerma made most interceptions, Lerma and Neto were joint-top for recoveries, Senesi made most clearances and Kelly made our only block in the game.

I imagine in the xG stakes today, neither of Solanke's one on one's will count, as somehow neither resulted in a shot at goal?! Which might undervalue whatever we might have been worth.

Is that just a sum of xG to date?

I think he just has to get a touch to have the algorithm rate the event. Did he get touches? Maybe.

Here’s the xG from a disappointing performance. Although at 75 minutes I certainly hadn’t written off our chances. Villa took the lead early on, a deflected shot from Watkins found Bailey who went past Kelly and squared the ball to an unmarked Luiz in the box (55%). Luiz’s run was clever having come back from an offside position and with defenders not clear as to who should be picking him up. We had a big chance (about 1 in 4) from Anthony in the 10th minute, from the left hand side of the goal. The next half-chance was from Ouattara (rated as 1 in 5) which might be a header that was cleared from the line (being at ground level didn’t help perceiving depth) which was closely followed by Neto stopping well from Watkins (approaching 1 in 3). After this burst of action, not much happened for about 40 minutes, with Villa content to time waste and sit on 1-0. The main highlights being a blasted free kick by Billing that Martinez tipped over and Solanke being put through one on one, but dithered (maybe due to a lack of confidence) which allowed Mings to get back and block, and also heavily reduce the xG.

When we made a sub (Brooks for Smith) the xG was Villa 1.46 AFCB 0.96. Whatever the reason, after this substitution the game turned and the xG until the end of the game was Villa 1.74 AFCB 0.00. Villa had three big chances, the second goal where Ramsey went around Stephens and slotted under Neto’s arm (it was either well planned or not hit correctly) which was rated 37%. The next large chance was from Mings which was well saved by Neto (2 in 5) and then there was Villa’s third goal. A flick on left Buendia unmarked in front of Neto to head in (56%). It was a disappointing capitulation in the last 10 minutes, but before that it was fairly even.

For the majority of the game the average positions are largely unremarkable, a standard back four, three within the middle, two wingers and a target man. The first set of substitutions changed this slightly with Rothwell (14) and Anthony (32) being replaced by Traore (22) and Semenyo (24). Both moved left of centre, with Billing (29) presumably dropping more central. The next substitution was heart-warming being the return of Brooks (7) for Smith (15). Villa had made it 2 nil before the tactics paper had been handed around the team but possibly we were going to shift to a back 3, and have Brooks (7) and one other as the wide men. However, this didn’t work, and we were under constant pressure as witnessed by Brooks average position. Subs were made in the final minutes with Ouattara and Billing being replaced with Vina and Moore, although there was not enough time to work out this formation.

Senesi had most touches (71) closely followed by Kelly with 70 then Stephens with 61. Anthony and Ouattara had most touches in Villa’s half (24) with Ouattara having 21 touches in the final third, followed by Solanke with 18. We had 25 touches in the opposition’s penalty area, Solanke with 10 and Ouattara with 6 having the most. Brooks only managed 4 touches whilst on, all in our own half, Moore didn’t get a touch of the ball.

Senesi attempted most passes with 56, followed by Kelly with 51 and Stephens with 45. This was probably caused by Villa sitting back after taking the lead with the ball being played around the AFCB defence. This also probably contributed to the high completion rates (84% in total) We attempted 53 passes in the Villa final third and were successful with 46.
