Excellent result, great to get 3 points against Crystal Palace, who have been a bit of a trouble team for us in the past.
As others have mentioned, I did notice that we seemed to be sitting back more in the second half than we have in recent games. It seemed to me that there was an instruction for Cook and Christie to not press as high up the pitch, leading to this situation and ceding additional possession to Palace. Proud of the team for managing to grind it out against Palace in this manner without many moments of worry.
For any concerned that this second half could be part of a bad trend, I'd wager that that is not the case and this is rather a case of Iraola making a decision based on depth and fixtures. Between Villa, Palace, and ManU we have 3 games in 7 days, and the midfield duo of Cook and Christie have (and likely will) start and play all 90 of these games. Having them not press as far forward means less sprints forward to apply pressure and less sprints back to recover whenever the press is broken. Already having a lead against a toothless Palace team was a great opportunity to decrease their exertions in the second half to ensure they had energy for the full 90 and for the game on Saturday.
Often, we won't have an important midweek game requiring them to play all 90, so this situation is not one we see every week. Further, once Scott and Adams are fit to play again we'll have players who can rotate, sub, and compete for their starting positions, so trying to find some rest for them while on the pitch won't be a concern.
