Mastermind

I gave up trying once to count how many questions each contestant was given - and whether there was a game changing discrepancy. Some questions are so long and take up so much time.

Having said that, it became a lot less intellectual when people started to have subjects like "Friends Season 1 to 3".

p.s. Neil Dawson on the career and cocktail choices of Richard Hughes would get me watching it again.

All these programmes now seem to be for people who can rapidly swot up a subject. I know someone who got to the Mastermind final a couple of years ago, and she would choose a specialist subject for each round, which she had no prior knowledge of, and then swot it up.

Similarly Bake-off - I'm sure in the early series there would be real baking experts. Now its mainly kids who have practised a lot.

I though this might be of interest given the number of know it all's on this forum.

I've actually already applied for this several times after being badgered by friends and relatives...but I think the volume of applications is vast ...you have to be dead lucky to get near it.
I wanted to answer questions on the Life of Joseph Conrad, the Author and Sea Captain.

I got to the final selection round of The Chase a few years ago. The selection process was held at the Holiday Inn at Mayflower Park in Southampton. It was a certainly an eye opener. From my group of 10 the only person selected was a middle aged Welsh woman with about as much charisma as a slice of mouldy bread. Afterwards I was having a coffee and chatting to one of the crew there and asked how they picked their contestants. He told me it's all on demographics. So many young white women or men. So many middle aged ethnic minority. So many older aged white or ethnic men and women. Etc etc. The Welsh woman was chosen because they needed a Welsh woman. It was fun going through the process but selection was a PC box ticking exercise so pretty much a waste of time really. It put me off watching the show tbh

The rest is entertainment podcast recently discussed this.
Don't come across as arrogant, don't get every question right. Also, having something about you that will be interesting on TV.

Apocalypse Now is only partly based on Heart of Darkness...with the setting moved from the Congo to Vietnam.
Any current MM question about Conrad could be easily be referred / linked to that.
