Kerkez the winger.

I wonder if Iraola will be tempted to play Kelly at LB with Kerkez as a winger in the absence of Tavernier for the next few games ......he caused Utd more problems than Dango did when moved forward after Sinisterra went off and if you were a full back who had played 120mins a few days previously the last thing you'd want to deal with is Kerkez's energy.....there's also the option of bringing Dango on once the poor right back has been run ragged.

Eddie tried that with Smith about 7 years ago and it failed miserably. I know the full back position has evolved massively over the last decade or so to the extent that most full backs are now essentially auxiliary wingers, but it is still a very different position .

I wasn't at the game on Saturday, but was surprised to see that there was no real difference in the forward positioning of Kelly and Kerkez (although this could be skewed as Kelly only came on in the 39th minute and Sinisterra was likely to be advanced of Kerkez).

But assuming that there wasn't a big difference in the postioning (as a block) of the team between these two periods, it looked as though Iraola was allowing them both to get forward, with the other covering as necessary. People might have had a better perspective at the ground though.

I wouldn’t be doing this unless absolutely necessary, I’m sure he can ‘do a job’ there but Dango is more than capable. I seem to be one of the few who hasn’t written Dango off, play him on the right consistently like GON did last season and he will cause teams problems.

There seems to be this re-writing of history going on that ‘all’ Dango did last season was score that goal against Spurs. It just isn’t true. He had good games against Liverpool, Forest, Newcastle, Arsenal and Leeds too providing very important assists in all of them. He also had some very bright moments from the bench. The common denominator is that in every one of these appearances he played on the right wing, for whatever reason he doesn’t seem as comfortable as a left winger which we’ve seen last year on occasion and this season too. He’s a good young player who will produce when played consistently in his best position, people have short memories to forget how important he was to our survival last season.

He's had plenty of decent performances this season too. He's decent. Completely erratic but causes problems and works hard.

I decided to quickly look at the stats of Ouattara and Semenyo. I suspect we can all agree that Semenyo has been a success this season whilst Ouattara has split opinion. For transparency I think he has done ok and has potential.

I was surprised that Ouattara had better or comparable stats in many aspects, apart from the really important ones. He had similar xG per 90 mins and similar xA per 90 mins, but his shooting has been poor. His shot accuracy and goal conversion is only about a third of Semenyo's, which is probably clouding the view on the rest of his game such as dribbles, take-ons, aerial duels, tackels and defensive involvements. A couple of deflections that go in from Ouattara (I think Semenyo has at least 1) and the picture would begin to look different.

I've also provided the heat maps (from Fantasy Football Scout) for those interested.

Shot accuracy and conversion not surprisingly Dango's issue. Needs to improve on that aspect but has been decent at most other things.

He can do a job on wing, for sure - and as suggested, has played there.

Problem is, how many players do you chop/change and shoe-horn into positions they're not 100% comfortable with?

Odd move here and there is inspired, if done intelligently with right players.

Too many and it starts to come across like we're operating at a car boot sale/bric-a-brac store level, rather than Waitrose ;)

I dunno, maybe with ffp, this kind of thing will become more prevelent. To me, it just looks a bit desperate and pub team stuff tbh.

Irony of course that despite there being a lot of bemoaning the number of wingers we’ve signed, we’ve now resorted to playing a full back on the wing because we don’t have enough.

:D nice one... spot on!

Dango still has that unpredictability to him that many wingers seem to have early in their career. The best ones mature and start producing more consistently as they work out how they can be most effective rather than trying all their tricks. The poor ones never master it and remain an enigma, producing an occasional worldly performance (relative to their level) so fans can dream of what might have been.

He's still only 22. He hasn't been getting the thing he probably needs - consistent game time in his preferred position. Understandable as there have been better options available but now's the time to give him that chance and see if he can start to take it.

Barring an unlikely run of results we're probably out of the European race but we're also safe. Tell him the starting position is his until the end of the season so he doesn't need to panic and try and do it all to show off what he can do whenever he gets the ball. He knows he has game time coming so can relax a little.

As for Kerkez, I'd also be using this time to get him ready for next season where there's a good chance he'll be our first choice LB. He has a lot to work on so I'd rather not distract him by trying to get him to learn another position.

I know there's significant prize money to play for, but there's also a chance to try and develop two of our younger players so they're able to contribute much more next season.

Agree with the Dango part. Less so with Kerkez as I just feel he’s off in the summer.

If he is staying and he’s wrongly accused with this perceived attitude/distraction problem then, I do also agree as in an ideal world he will nail down that left back role for years to come.
