Neto

Barkley has stood out in a poor team. I think we have enough quality players in this position.
He has final ball and shooting power and goals. We get neither from Christie and a bit of the former from Cook but not the latter. We can’t rely on Adams to play and Billing doesn’t seem to fit the system sadly. So we need to strengthen here even if Scott starts to click.

My mindset default tries to see positives.

We don't know if Barkley would suit Andoni's style either tbf.....not sure he has the engine.....it's something Scott still has to come to terms with......Christie isn't as talented as Scott or Billing but he plays because of the amount of ground he covers.

I think Neto was at fault for their third. The first, I think Rogers got the better of Smith and then belted it in. Not Neto's fault. The second was poor defending from Kelly I think, so not Neto's particular fault. For the third, Neto was indecisive and then not wide enough, so yes, for number 3 I agree but notthe first two.

Think he's had a good season overall. If you want attacking football with your CB's attacking the final third you need to accept that the 'keeper will find himself in more tricky situations.

The goals he conceded yesterday looked a bit weak but I'd be interested what the xGoT was. That's the problem with small sample sizes, you concede 3 of 5 on target shots it's never going to look great.

You called :)

It was about 2.2 from shots on target, but it is a small sample size. Although you can always get into a discussion that better keepers might make you go for the corners and influence xGoT.

Neto maybe sold himself a little for the third, but I'm not sure he necessarily was at fault for the first two. If we'd have scored them, then I'd be congratulating our players rather than pointing fingers at the keeper.

Over the season, however, AFCB were expected to concede 51.73 goals and we have conceded 60, so there is a question of whether Neto has been underperforming.

Any stats on how he compares in major errors leading to goals?

While I wouldn't say that any of Villa's goals were necessarily down to goalkeeping errors as such, I feel sure that a more accomplished keeper showing greater determination would have made a much better fist of preventing all three: the first by standing tall and making himself look large rather than dropping down onto his knees and allowing the shot to go above him, the second by spreading himself wider in anticipation of where the shot might be placed, whilst for the third, which was the worst of the lot, by getting out to the loose ball quicker and diving on it before Watkins had time to get to it.
If we want to make progress next season in my view we definitely need a much more talented and dominating presence in that position.

Kaminski would be a decent signing IMO and a more dominant keeper is definitely required…don’t think Neto or Travers is the answer next season….

Don’t really think we need to worry too much about the midfield as a priority? If/when Billing goes then maybe? But we have Faivre, Brooks and Scott to consider too…think Rothwell will go?
We need a left back or left side centre back and a striker to support Unal (Dom will go for sure IMO)

Do wonder what Andoni has on his list to improve us in August? It could be a very interesting close season for AFCB without doubt….

Thought it was interesting that McKenna made the bench ahead of any of the other options, both keeper and outfield. Maybe an indication that he's already made a big impression since arriving and they have big plans for him?

Normally keepers break through later but Donnarumma became first choice at AC Milan at around 17.

Not that I'd imagine we'll do that, but it might be he goes out on loan next season to get more experience and, if he does well, he comes into the picture. It isn't like we've been afraid to play young keepers in recent seasons.

Given his wages and two years left on his deal, I don't see anything happening with Neto. The only possibility is Travers supplanting him but I'd be very surprised if we actually signed another high profile keeper.

Neto does look like a confidence keeper. He tried to come for one cross at the weekend and completely missed it. Thereafter he was rooted to his line for everything, like he was afraid to make the same mistake again.

Probably the worst position for a confidence player to play.

I ummed and ahhed about this Rob. I originally had them in and then took them out. As the xG is from when the shot is taken, if the defence has allowed a player an easy chance then this will already be incorporated in the value and so it doesn't need to be adapted. It's the same should they be putting pressure on the forward and reducing the xG. It would need changing if our defenders had a habit of deflecting them past Neto but I don't think this has happened much this season.

I bet you are glad you asked. :)
