So did the old Fishy predictor, and it seems highly likely if we win the next 2 games and beat Brentford, we'll finish 10th.

Massive week, I reckon we can do this.

I was prepared to call this outcome highly unlikely, but the Opta season simulation has us about 14% probability of finishing 10th or better. The next two are "six-pointers" for these places.

If we win the next two games and Palace pick up
2 points or less next two games then the lowest we can finish is 13th. #OneStepAtATime

If we were to get more points but finish lower than last season, would people still regard that as improving?

That's a good question - if looking at points and position was the only determination then more points but a lower position could imply that the teams below us were weaker this season than last season?

Good question that. You can make a case for either, both or neither as being a judge of a good season…
and probably depends on who you ask.

More points usually means more wins, which I guess is good for the fans, higher position means more money for the owner :D

It would mean an even worse end to the season than last year and judging by how people reacted to that you'd think that most would not regard it as an improvement. Don't think it will happen though.

Not really if you consider performances over points.

And yes I know you value points over performances, but when points don’t matter it should be a slightly different discussion?

I've not really said I value points over performances I've said that results are ultimately all that matters.

That's not particularly what I was getting at though. Tbh I thought those who so vociferously castigated O'Neil for the final four games were way ott but if we were to finish below last season it would involve a significantly worse end to the season than that. If that did happen could you really say we'd improved? The squad is a lot stronger than what O'Neil had to work with afterall.

As it goes I think we will win at least another couple and it will be a moot point.

This will probably turn into a 6 page argument, BUT,

Results are all that matters = Points over performances

Or is there a different point system I am not aware of?

I'm sure I read somewhere that we had dropped 20 odd points from a winning position. If we can learn from those games, then next season should be our best ever.

Even an extra 6 points, where we've conceded in the last 5 minutes to drop point(s), means we could be sitting in 9th - Newcastle, Luton, Villa, Wolves and Brentford spring to mind though to be fair we have had a couple last minute goals as well, but you get my drift.

Very, very fine margins indeed.

For me, the football we are playing and some of our results, far outweigh the position - we have not really seen anything remotely close since the halcyon days of EH and the Championship.

As Brucie would say, good game, good game. But, for some, points make prizes and in our world that is a few million extra. I'm sure Bill is fully aware of the situation and his long term vision for the club in terms of progress.

I said results are ultimately all that matters not that they are all that matters - meaning sure a good performance in a defeat is better than a bad defeat, but there comes a point if you lose all the time when they are simply not good performances no matter how pleasing on the eye they might be. Ultimately results trump everything even if you can be more circumspect about individual games.

I don't particularly care whether we finish 11th or 12th* but if we lose every remaining game and finish lower than last year then it will hardly be an improvement on last year given the squad improvement will it?

*Tbh I would love to finish above Brighton.
