Neto

We need a new keeper next season. But to call him a coward is absurd.
Agree, it was a particularly low comment. Could Neto have done better. Possibly but really hard to say as he was completely exposed by our defense for all goals and for the first, he had to make a decision. I'm not too sure what he saw with an opposition player a few yards away from him absolutely smashing the ball as hard as he can. The other two were similar in that as the last man he has to make a decision. I say this although I've not been impressed with Neto this season but to blame him for yesterdays goals seems a bit extreme to me.

Thought it was interesting that McKenna made the bench ahead of any of the other options, both keeper and outfield. Maybe an indication that he's already made a big impression since arriving and they have big plans for him?

Normally keepers break through later but Donnarumma became first choice at AC Milan at around 17.

Not that I'd imagine we'll do that, but it might be he goes out on loan next season to get more experience and, if he does well, he comes into the picture. It isn't like we've been afraid to play young keepers in recent seasons.

Given his wages and two years left on his deal, I don't see anything happening with Neto. The only possibility is Travers supplanting him but I'd be very surprised if we actually signed another high profile keeper.

Neto does look like a confidence keeper. He tried to come for one cross at the weekend and completely missed it. Thereafter he was rooted to his line for everything, like he was afraid to make the same mistake again.
McKenna was at fault for the Blades’ first goal in the last development squad game. He passed directly to the opposition and they smacked it into his net. Many of his kicks out went straight to the opposition and put us straight back under pressure. He terrified me whenever he had the ball at his feet tbh.

Probably best if we leave him in the U21s for a little while longer :)

You called :)

It was about 2.2 from shots on target, but it is a small sample size. Although you can always get into a discussion that better keepers might make you go for the corners and influence xGoT.

Neto maybe sold himself a little for the third, but I'm not sure he necessarily was at fault for the first two. If we'd have scored them, then I'd be congratulating our players rather than pointing fingers at the keeper.

Over the season, however, AFCB were expected to concede 51.73 goals and we have conceded 60, so there is a question of whether Neto has been underperforming.
I love the insights these kinds of stats give.
Very interesting. Thanks Matt !

I’d have instinctively said that Neto has probably performed slightly below where we could expect him to be and the stats would seem to back that up.

The question now is, has he performed “poorly” enough for us to consider replacing him a priority ? My guess is, probably not. And then of course there is the contract situation to take into consideration.

Luton's keeper wouldn't be enough of an upgrade IMO, we should target someone who can save us points and keep us in games when we are under pressure, like Travers when we went up and he cleaned up on the player of the season awards.
Wolves have a brilliant keeper, he's 32, they're apparently skint, maybe we could exchange a player GON rates and AI doesn't fancy? Areola is sometimes on the bench for West Ham, he is one of the best keepers in the league and we've got a good song for him already. If Newcastle get Rambo, Pope would be a decent signing.
The keeper is the most important player on the pitch. Neto was one of the main reason we stayed up last season, this season he has had 2 or 3 lengthy spells of poor form and one or 2 short spells of good form, one was right after Travers returned and Radu was picked. At the moment his confidence is shot and he doesn't look like returning to his form of last season.

If Pope is a loan or an improbable signing, we should pursue it. He is a class act.

The fruity, little fella who is on the BOTN podcast was particularly scathing about Neto's ability. Which was a little unfair as he missed their first couple of goals due to his habit of disappearing into the concourse and pushing as many pints down his neck, within his 30 minute time frame.

Feel like we probably expect too much from Neto and perhaps being guilty of having slightly short memories. He was a player signed when the club had slimmer pickings. He’s terrible at crosses and really struggled this season especially, but last season he was wonderful on many occasions and may have been the difference in keeping the team up.

Like a few other players on the pitch today, he will be replaced with someone better as the club is now in a different place. Travers, I think has been given multiple opportunities and shown not to be up to it at this level.

Regarding todays game, Villa are a class outfit and I think our defenders had a bit of a nightmare, mostly because the rest of the players (including fullbacks) were too far up the pitch and were exposed (zabarnyi perhaps had his worst game for us today?)
Agree with what you've written Neto not the only one off the pace Sunday, we gave the ball away too cheaply and allowing them to equalise on the stroke of half time gave them the impetus to rip into us in the second half, also why didn't Neto have a cap on in the second half, he kept complaining he couldn't see the ball at corners.

They should rename it the Back in the Bar podcast......honestly they've missed more goals than they've seen!......never understood the need to drink during half time.

They’re Neil’s best buddies.

I also don’t understand why you would pay so much to see (and travel to) a game and then not watch all of it, there is plenty of time to drink before and afterwards surely?

What and miss some of the game ?

Yeah if I'm on the piss properly I, or one of my group, will go down and get the beers in and we might miss.second half ko.

The football is obviously the focal point of the day but I find it's best not to pin your entire enjoyment of the day to it. I don't miss as much of the game as that podcast guy does but I also don't think I've seen Dom Solanke score at Fulham despite being there for all of those games.

They probably enjoy doing that, I know I do.
Enjoy missing parts of the game? Okay then. If you’re that desperate for a drink that you are not bothered about missing key moments of the match then I’d suggest that you might have a problem… you literally have to wait only an hour from half time until you can drink again

I quite like the BOTN podcast, although it's getting more camp than Glastonbury festival. Probably why I like it.
The more the little fella imbibes the 'zestier' he gets. After a few pints, the shirt comes off, then he performance some strange dance routines, then he moves on to kissing his mate at any given opportunity. He's definitely up for it. After a good away win, I expect anything can and does happen in that car. I would have loved to have been a fly on the window after that Man U win.
The 3 or 4 amigos are certainly close, although they sometimes have a couple of women in tow who lurk in the background and I've not worked out the relationships there. They probably shout the pints in for the little fella.
Anyway they seem quite happy and look like they are getting plenty of action. Nice work BOTN!

Why are you saying this to me? Do you think I'm going to change my ways because you don't approve? Serious question.
