Match Report and Mom v Man U

There are three things certain in life. Death, taxes and Romelu Lukaku scoring against Bournemouth. It’s written in stone and he doesn’t even have to start a game to do it.

It was a balmy, steamy night at the Vitality with a real air of pre season friendly to it. Neither team busting a gut, pleasant exchanges of play and a quiet crowd basking in sultry air. You had to pinch yourself to remember there were points at stake.

Eddie reverted to his default 4-4-2 and continued the nostalgia by bringing back Surman for Gosling. Wilson got the nod in front of Defoe up top.

There’s nowt much to report in the first 45 other than BT customers checking how much they pay for football. Mourinho has re-written the Man U style and Bournemouth were back in Surman recycling backwards mode. It was largely dull apart from the few times it turned tedious. You could argue Bournemouth had the better of play, certainly in spells, but the quality of final ball reached a level of ineptness not seen since Jimmy Quinn left. Time and time again play broke down to a ball behind someone, too hard or aimed where someone used to be. King and Fraser were particularly bad but they were outstripped by Ibe who is right back to his early season worst on the evidence of his last two outings.

The former Liverpool winger did have one of Bournemouth’s two shots firing tamely wide. King had the other a ferocious effort straight at De Gea.

United also had two proper efforts, the difference being they took one. First Begovic saved smartly from Rashford but he was powerless when Herrera’s pin point pass left our defence stationary and SMALLING slid in Lingaard’s cross.

HT Bournemouth 0 Manchester United 1

The second half was following the pattern of the first...safe non threatening football from two sides not throwing bodies forwards. One threatening moment occurred when in the game’s pivotal moment King broke and squared for Wilson who was clearly pushed as he was about to score. Poor refereeing indeed.

Eddie brought Mousset on in place of Ibe and moved to 3-4-3 and for awhile the home team dominated. Lys is always a good conduit as he drops for the ball and things knitted together better. Again though every move broke down on the paucity of the final pass which remained frustratingly telegraphed or poor.

United scored their second from a Bournemouth attack. Wilson is not at his sharpest and he turned into trouble, lost it and United broke. If Eddie wants evidence of why Surman shouldn’t play he should watch his shameful attempt to get back from this break. Like a toddler running in treacle. Pogba led the surge and his excellent throughball was clipped over Begovic by our old adversary LUKAKU.

Gosling arrived for a leggy Surman, Defoe arrived for King...none of it mattered...they could still be out there now and they wouldn’t have passed to a Bournemouth player in the box.

FT Bournemouth 0 Manchester United 2

Begovic 6 - safe enough.

Francis 6 - always involved and generally steady.
Cook 7 - tough evening but stuck to task.
Ake 7. - would we have stayed up without him? Class.
Daniels 6 - steady unspectacular shift.

Fraser 6 - effort but no real quality at all tonight.
Cook 8 - looked at home in this company with vision and turns.
Surman 5 - just so safe, slow and out fought.
Ibe 4 - loose on ball, up blind alleys, non covering etc.

King 5 - quiet game and in wrong position.
Wilson 5 - worked hard but hold up play poor and confidence to shoot gone.

Mom another shining performance from Lewis Cook. Really looked classy.

Verdict.
People will point to Man U squad value and the referee. They are very valid points too. I’m not convinced we did enough though leaving that aside. I’ve just watched 180 minutes of Bournemouth and seen two shots on target. I’ve not seen more than 5 off target I don’t think. The formation was static again, the midfield two swamped, King out of position and Ibe was carried. None of that should surprise Eddie as it’s largely been the story of the season apart from a mid year purple patch.

These are all easy fixes...that was Manchester United in name but not of vintage performance..they were there to be got at but we really lacked quality and bustle. It was frustrating wondering if those two losses could be solved by Harry Arter but Eddie resisted the chorus from the fans to see their favourite ever number eight. His energy is badly missed and his quality to pick a pass. He may have been poor but he has had a break and he is twice the player Surman or Gosling can dream of being when he is on form.

Up front we lack...I would like to see King on his central own with Mousset behind if we do 4-4-2 or those two with Wilson play from the start against Southampton. Nothing to lose...and after a real poor run the fans deserve strong back to back performances now. We need to shake ourselves out of these non- Bournemouth performances.

Do actually think you are harsh on Surman re the 2nd goal. He would have 'taken one for the team' had he not already been on a yellow (harshly in my opinion). Pogba is quick, quicker than a number of our players. Having said that, agree he is not PL standard.

It is getting frustrating seeing King deployed in the number 10 role, it has been clear for 2 years now he cannot play that role and is not happy there. He only comes alive when he is the central striker or out wide.

Largely agree.
Surman is ok with the ball at his feet with no one around him so he can pass accurately, but he can't run or tackle,so no point him being in the team really.
Yes Arter has been poor but I also wonder what he may have done had he been alongside Cook in the last two games.
The forward positions are a conundrum.
No two strikers have forged a partnership this season whichever combo has played together.
It's interesting that last season the most successful partnership was Afobe and King.
Our best partnership previously was Kermorgant and Wilson,I would like to see us sign a striker like him, maybe Jay Rod,as he is totally different to the strikers we have.
I disagree we didn't get at them enough,I think we did,but as you say,it was the final ball lacking every time.

Two up front.
Two in midfield.
No better than other recent games.
4 is generous for Ibe. We had ibe watch. Fascinating. He is unable to mark a man or work out where he should be.
A start with Arter or Gosling for ibe would have given more impetus.
55 minutes playing with ten men.

I agree. Without Ake we would be bottom 3.

I really can't bear another **************** afternoon at St Mary's.

There was a time when Wilson used to bully defenders. I didn't see any point in bringing Defoe. Lewis Cook is class and needs a partner, preferably a big one, I hate Fellini but someone like that. I am going to give up watching AFCB training videos because they don't seem to have any connection with the games. Ake is already a legend, and if Francis predictably hoofs the ball again …

Have a few beers and just take the piss out of them. I heard Wilson on the way home saying we have 10 days to get ready and go at them 'all guns blazing'

Pressures off mate

Only Ake,S Cook, and L Cook looked reasonably comfortable tonight....the rest were totally outclassed by United. But that is where we are with the current squad, King seems to have regressed this season,Wilson isn’t sharp anymore...Daniels too slow...Fraser shows some good skills but half of his final balls are poor...Surman is Championship at best...we missed Adam Smiths energy and pace. Most times we are out muscled on the ball and don’t anticipate the ball coming to us as we move. But it was the second best team in the country plus their referee who was obviously too frightened of Jose Moanio to award us two clear penalties!

Hmm - too harsh Neil. We were below par but against a team playing for their places in the semis and perhaps in the ManU squad (Mourinho must have given them a right lashing after the WBrom defeat). Smalling and Jones were tight on our forwards and their midfield reasonably neat, though miles off the standard of City, Spurs and Liverpool.

Ibe had a shocker, Surman OK for 45 minutes then collapsed - the rest made a good effort with no favours from the ref. The main issue again is the midfield. Lewis Cook was excellent but just can't carry the whole burden. When they scored it cried out for midfield leadership but Cook was on his own and Gosling just feeble when he came on for Surman (Harry Arter appeared to stump off down the tunnel at this point).

If Eddie sticks with a midfield two we'll be in trouble next season. "Oven-ready" reinforcements are needed. And for those suggesting a move for Luke Shaw - forget it. Lumpy and panicky - we can do better than that.

Poorest report of the season.

Surman had a decent game. Probably one of our better team performances in the last month or so and but for a two or three diabolical refereeing decisions we may well have been in this game.

Only agree that we don't seem to want to shoot or cross the ball. Other than that a decent performance against another top class side.

King and Ibe should be dropped, for absolutely anyone.

Neil's report summed up the game well, for me. We seem to have lost our way - no fluency, too slow to attack, not enough threat up front. You make your own luck, and if we are blaming our loss on a couple of refereeing decisions, then that's masking the truth. We just weren't good enough, against a mediocre Man Utd team, who even West Brom managed to beat.

Exactly. Two shots on target in 180 mins. We have peppered Man U and Liverpool in previous seasons, sometimes winning, sometimes losing but always had a go. Six goals v Liverpool last year....no goals and three shots this year.

Anyway...let’s blame the referee.

I thought S. Cook was probably our best player. Him and Aké both had excellent games, although I wonder if Aké could have done better with their second. Francis played okay, but boy it terrifies me whenever a pacey winger runs at him. Daniels is now one of the leagues poorest full backs... Full backs were so key to our attacking play for the last X number of years, but now they are scarily cautious at getting forward. Is it deliberate?

King seems to have lost half a yard of pace. Realistically, that is the difference between him being an asset or a liability. Wilson was physically excellent, technically abysmal. Ibe's execution was dreadful often proceeded by flashes of brilliance. I thought Fraser worked hard but I was frustrated with his attitude a couple of times when an imperfect pass was played to him and his resolution was to throw his hands up in the air and stand still.

Thought Surman was very poor, misplacing passes and his lack of pace scarily exposed. Surman isn't a bad player in general, but we have too many poor to average quality midfielders in our squad. We need to be offloading at least one, possibly two, and looking for an upgrade.

Or play the proven premier league central midfielders we do have.

King has never played well with Wilson. Three years of trying it. You think the penny would drop. His two great spells have been playing up front on his own (first season) and playing with Afobe or Wilshere behind him (last season). At that stage there was talk of him being worth 40m with 17 goals flying in. Every other time it’s been him behind Wilson looking distinctly average.

I thought we were ok in the attacking department, things just didn't quite click, especially for Fraser and King together. Ibe was awful and I have been trying to give him the benefit of time. He is greedy and tries to be the hero. Too many instances last night where he and other got into good attacking positions and instead of passing, kept the ball and either got tackled or went backwards.

United were good and efficient. Pogba and Herrera were excellent. Yes it was a penalty and maybe the linesman should have been more brave, but I would prefer Wilson to have used every muscle sinew to poke that in.

We weren't bad, but it was one of those nights were the difference in quality showed.

Lastly, I have only been an armchair follower this season, but Mousset is looking better and better with every match he plays. I'm hoping he'll really come on next season. Him, King, L. Cook, Ake and Fraser should be who we fill in the gaps around in future.

Our best run of the season saw a lone striker rather than trying to balance king and Wilson with Ibe outstanding once freed of defensive duties. As other said, playing surman freed Cook to push forward more. Their first should have been disallowed and Wilson would have scored not for the foul by shaw. Must add Man Utd are a joyless team in contrast to the likes of Liverpool and Man City

I thought Daniels had one of his best games of the season. Some crucial headers thrown in too.

I'm not going to repeat the same post of the last 2 years about a certain player, but I am sure you all know better than me and I am blind.

Wilson had a very very strong match last night. Caused their defence problems, gave us an outlet. But got ZERO protection from the ref who once again fulfilled his role for the Premier League to perfection. King was disappointing.

Ake and L Cook though....we are so lucky.

Wilson was okay but his technical ability lacks true class IMO as for the 'unmentionable' he is too passive and wasteful, agree we are so lucky to have AkE and the two Cooks who all stood out last night...King looks unfit and a bit lost at the moment, he seems to have regressed this season. Francis and Daniels are just reaching their use by dates having given so much over the last five years for us.

Is it a two match report when you get a chance to be negative? We were crap against Liverpool and were well beaten - we were much better yesterday and should have got some points. Plenty to improve but it was hardly a dreadful performance.
