UEFA Nations League

...what like a 'World Cup' ?

:hihi: Sounds like a ground breaking concept doesn't it?!

Let's just hope UEFA and FIFA do keep discussing it rather than having a European Nations League and a World League...

The draw is tomorrow...

Huge issues for Denmark ahead of this first weekend.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45382474

Senior Danish players have refused to sign a new national team agreement in a dispute over commercial rights.
The DBU hopes to select Danish lower league players for a friendly with Slovakia and against Wales.

Wowsers, that sounds like a huge problem. Also very strange, unless the DBU is fully stitching them up, I've no idea why they'd be boycotting the game. Seems it's not individual players hence looking for purely uncapped players and not having manager. Perhaps DBU have to honour existing contracts of previously capped players if they don't accept newer less favourable terms. So looking outside that pool, my spider sense is going mental at this, think there's a lot more under the surface here, very intruiging

From The Telegraph:

"The players' union wants sponsorship deals to continue to focus on the team and not individuals, while the DBU is understood to want more flexible rules about the use of players in commercial contexts."

Sounds like the FA want to be able to pimp out their biggest individual stars to sponsors whilst the players say they can only market them as a team.

Have to respect players like Eriksen for trying to make it about the team not himself. Can't imagine that would happen with nations like Brazil or Portugal...

Its all about money, the players want to be paid like pop stars doing a gig. The women have the same problem. The players now want enormous amounts to play for their country. The DBU say all the profits they make goes into the roots of football in Denmark. Without that money the International players like Ericsson wouldn't be where they are now.

To be honest I’ve not had the willpower to study this in any detail, but isn’t it just all the European nations split into groups in order to qualify for the championships in a couple of years ?
Like the last time ?

Not really.

It’s kind of a tournament.
It’s kind of a route to the play-offs for countries who haven’t qualified.
It’s kind of a good way to make non qualification games more organised and worth while.

It’s actually “kind of” a good idea.

lots of positives but just means top players become even more over-played if managers feel the need to get results whereas friendlies enable stars to be rested in favour of giving youngsters a run-out. A big issue with friendlies is the constant substitutions after an hour that disrupt the game. However, the main problem is that international games are dull compared to domestic football.

Empty stadium tonight for England at Croatia.

Let’s hope that doesn’t give it a training ground feel.
