Match Report and MOM v West Ham

So before I blame Eddie or the players for our recent run of luck/form I decided to look at myself. Yesterday (casual Friday’s) for the first time in forever I did not wear my afcb polo shirt. Also I’ve made the decision to watch this game at the gym.

I hope my change in routine will jolt the wood nymphs or something.

You’re very welcome.

...thanks Neil, ouldn't make the game due to work yesterday....so I am taking your report as 'gospel'...

relieved to see us get a win and to hear that Adam Smith is fired up, he has been an important player for us over the years and key to our PL success IMO

one small thing I noticed. Smith is not 100% in shape. Fantastic match and great player but he was huffing and puffing out there.

All about percpetions I suppose. Cook was easily MotM for me. he and Ake had an excellent game. Brooks I'd give a 6.5, he actually had possibly his worst game for us, although I'm convinced he's the best player we've ever actually had, in terms of his creativity and capability.

I wonder what Fraser's issue was, shortly before he came off and with Eddie, when he was subbed?
Yup. Between Cook and Gosling for me.

I've seen 2 sets of player ratings, one giving MOM to Brooks, the other to Lerma. Personally I thought they were our 2 weakest players yesterday lol.

I thought it was brave of EH to drop Begovic, but fair play to him. Boruc had a decent enough game, something Begovic has been finding hard to come by lately.

It wasn't a picture perfect performance, but it was a small improvement and we were definitely a bit more robust defensively. My MOM probably goes to Smith for driving us forward so many times. Kudos to King - we finally saw some of his ability!

Aye, Brooks did well but not MOM for me. Too many errant passes in the 2nd half.
Wee man or King for me; really good to see the latter bag a goal. It feels like its been a while since he last scored.

Looking forward to Chelsea – the signs are looking positive, especially if they're still without a centre-forward when they arrive here.

Difficult to rate Boruc imo – he had one shot to save and his distribution was dodgy as per. I think it was Eddie's way of giving Begovic a kick up the rear; maybe he's not working hard enough in training.

lerma- he's definitely got a shot in him it's just 80% of them don't hit the target! What a player he will be once he gets it all together

Boruc - We have the quick players to break, he was moving it far quicker than Begovic we just need the players making the runs

King - blows hot and cold including his body language but the 2nd half was more like him, using his pace and power and determination. Thought he was coming off at one point but glad he stayed on.

Brooks - best player in the team now. Scary how good he is going to be.

Smith - the best left back now at the club, makes things happen and great engine

Ake - would love to see more surging runs forward as another option

Boruc 6 - Some very dodgy moments, didn’t really have much to do. Played the ball out quickly and effectively.

Clyne 7 - Very good defensive performance. Linkup play was a bit off at times. Already looking like Mr. Dependable.

Cook 7 - Dominant display at the back. Some misplaced passes, a poor miscommunication with Boruc. Dealt with Carroll well.

Ake 7 - Much improved display. Some misplaced passes but never really caught out by the West Ham attack.

Smith 7 - Excellent attacking display from fullback, with some awesome running. Caught out a few times at the back.

Brooks 8 - Can appear to drift in and out of games, but is constantly at the heart of all our good attacking play. Great assist.

Gosling 7 - Very energetic, combative display with some fine interceptions. Lax passing at times, but improved from Everton.

Lerma 8 MOM- He’s the fucking Colombian Winston Wolf. Yes, his shooting is appalling, and his passing can be wayward, but if we mess up at the back he just appears and sorts everything out.

Fraser 7 - Good pace, was nice to see him not get completely abused by defenders for once. He could work on his crossing a bit though, even with all the assists he has.

King 7 - Poor decision making at times, but ran himself into the ground and deserved a goal for his efforts. Looked exhausted.

Wilson 8 - Constant menace, an absolute thunderc**t of a goal, and unlucky not to get two. Much better focal point than King or Moose.

Subs:
Stanislas 7
- Wasn’t too involved, tidy play and a belter of a pass to Brooks for the second goal. Better performance.

Daniels 6 - Was barely on, but the one thing he did get time to do was a sexy trap of the ball and a great pass, so he can have a 6.

Mousset N/A -

Out of interest, if Boruc was only a "6" yesterday, what was Begovic at Everton?!

Boruc was a 6 IMO because he had nothing to do all afternoon apart from one shot near the end. He did very nearly present WHU with a clear chance with one of his mishit clearances with about 10 mins to go as well, gave most people a near heart attack around me. Hard to rate anyone on that little action.
I would give Beg a 5 at Everton.

I must have missed the other 20% ;)

Sometimes in those positions (crowded situations just outside the box) it makes sense to fire off as powerful a shot as possible because of the risk of being dispossessed and gifting the opposition a breakaway. I have no problem with that. But really he shouldn’t be shooting from distance so often until he improves his technique.

The rest of Lerma’s game is very good indeed.

his shooting is quite horrific. there was a chance in the everton game when it was set up perfectly, but he still sent it skywards. just needs to keep them low for starters. but, if he did start scoring.... he'd be the complete player, and probly attracting a lot of attention!

For me, the whole team played well and deserved to get the same points. Its a team game.....

Interesting that in a win such as this, there are many differing views on who the MOM should be. Perhaps that's a result of a victory and better performance than the last one! Even some of those who perhaps haven't been playing so well of late can take credit. Games turn on a sixpence. Credit to Eddie for sticking to his principals.

Several players stood out for me though. Adam Smith and Ryan Fraser linking up. They've done it before and can terrorise other teams. Josh getting better, that run and goal, and Callum scoring a blinder.

Scored a good one at Newcastle
