Burton Albion v AFC Bournemouth - 3rd Round League Cup

I imagine the electrician was Burton’s MOM tonight, when it looked like the game was going to be called off and start again next week, he pulled out a hat-trick of tricks to make sure that didn’t happen.

Rubbish, EH will have wanted to win and the side he put out was more than capable of doing so. Its the players that need to look in the mirror.

How many times. 11 individuals that don’t play together, some of whom are probably league one level anyway, is not a strong enough side to win. The fact they needed pens to beat a league two side in the round before tells you that.

I don't like that we've lost to a L1 team in the only Cup we probably could win but I think most people would've made changes and agreed the line-up was good enough to win but just like the previous round the players couldn't be bothered because its only the cup. Not really Eddie's fault that the players cba to perform to a professional standard. If we win against West Ham Ill forgive it and City will probably win this Cup again anyway but likes of Solanke who couldn't score if his life depended on it, Ibe & Simpson need to do one and Fraser should go in Jan if he cba anymore, his miserable face annoys me.

If the manager doesn’t take it seriously this must transfer to the players surely! If you are playing in a Bournemouth cup team you are either a kid or it’s a punishment. Nobody being punished ever gives 100%

....we kicked off with over 65 million pounds worth of players and a League One side turned us without so much of a sweat....IF the players weren’t up for it then Howe has a big problem...with being able to motivate them enough to perform to their best...and all those calling for Simpson and Kilkenny to be part of our PL first team squad must be deluding themselves....Ibe and Solanke worked hard fair enough, but lack the quality to influence games like this, a sad indication of our transfer scouting system failing when it comes to a big club like Liverpool...I can accept below par efforts from Francis and Kelly returning from injuries but the likes of Surman,Cook and Mepham they were terrible with their passing and keeping hold of the ball....Fraser looks forlorn at times and he was at top mediocrity level tonight.....Travers was okay although his distribution is not great....some of the basics were not there in how we performed....

This is the first time in years we’ve done this badly in the Carabao Cup tbf. We usually go out straight away in the FA Cup, so everyone saying “Same old cup performances”, have you forgotten the consecutive QF appearances?

...but at a time when we are improving our squad and hoping to achieve more in The PL....should we also be doing better in cups? We we not just knocked out by Burton but were abject and impotent...

Yeah I know, that’s what I’m saying. Given that we’ve done so well in the Carabao Cup recently, it’s a bit of a shock to be dumped out this early on, playing so badly.

I’m just a bit bored of the narrative that we ALWAYS do this badly in the cups- consecutive quarter finals is good.

Personally I think Eddie, Jason and the squad know the Premier League is all that matters and these cups are merely a diversion and not worth the risk to the fitness of our players. So we see a clever performance by the Manager in front of the cameras before and after these disappointing games and no passion from the players during them. Behind the scenes at the club nobody cares about them. Be prepared for something completely different Saturday.

People should stop criticising individual players for this one. It has proven time and time again that throwing a completely untested group together in the cups does not work. Even the top six sides do not make as many changes as we do, and they certainly have better quality and depth in their squads. This is on EH again I’m afraid, he can’t expect to keep doing the same thing and achieve a different result.

In part, I fundamentally disagree with you. I liked the team when it was announced, it looked balanced and positive; however, the individual players on that pitch last night looked disinterested and almost like they weren't bothered if they won or lost. There is no excuse for the endless triangles followed by a short pass to an opponent or a long pass out of play. There is no excuse for surrendering meekly to a league 1 side, by which I mean not challenging, not competing and not working (let's face it, we should have lost by probably 4-0).

However, as per my report, I do agree that Eddie carries part of the can. The motivation comes from him, the tactics come from him. Both seemed absent last night.

Can't really disagree with this tbh. Like someone else said, right after the Saints game EH said his thoughts had already turned to the West Ham game.

Eddie on last night.

He said: “I see it as an opportunity missed every game you don’t fulfil your potential and play the way you want to.

“It’s desperately disappointing, we are kicking ourselves – we know we are a lot better than that. It didn’t really show in the match.

“I think we lacked everything. We lacked quality on the ball, we lacked intensity off the ball, we lacked our usual swagger. Certainly, we will have a lot of reflection.

“I need to go away, watch the game and pick the bones out of it.”

That is fair enough game of opinions and all that. The way I see it we were always asking for trouble with that back four and Surman just isn’t up to the task anymore, added to this a front four with very little actual game experience of playing together and that creates a very disjointed performance. In terms of the effort I absolutely agree, there is never any excuse for a lack of effort.

....difficult NOT to criticise players when you have paid and taken time to travel to Burton and have to witness that show that makes you wonder why you do it?

Sorry but I could take any spirited defeat and a team really looking like they can pass and penetrate a lower league defence in order to be competitive...but I feel like I have been robbed!
